The Mineola High School Spring Athletic Season resulted in three teams making the playoffs. Baseball, softball and girls varsity lacrosse all headed into the postseason.
The Girls Lacrosse Team finished a strong regular season with a tie and a loss to a pair of rugged opponents. In their penultimate contest of the season, the Lady Laxers battled Kellenberg to a non-league 13-13 tie. Mineola rallied from a 6-2 deficit to tie the score at 6-6 by scoring those 4 goals in a 51/2-minute spurt in the first half. Kellenberg opened the second half with three unanswered tallies. But, Mineola responded with 5 of its own and went ahead 11-10. Later in the half, Mineola still held a 13-12 lead. But, the Firebirds picked up a loose ball and scored with a minute remaining to forge the 13-13 tie. Seniors Jamie Carter and Mary Warren scored 3 goals apiece for the Lady Mustangs. Vikki Montalbano and Nikole Tsabasis had 2 goals each while Katherine Hock, Lauren Anderson and Deena Vego had one each. Allyson Murphy had 15 saves in goal. The Lady Mustangs faced an equally tough opponent just two days later. This time it was a league game against perennial power Glen Cove in the regular season finale. Glen Cove claimed a 12-11 victory that gave the winners the conference title and slipped Mineola into third place behind Florida Park. Coach Katie Sheehan said, "Though the result was disappointing, the game was an incredible display of lacrosse. Every player gave over 110 percent effort. It was a great contest, but as in any game, someone must lose and someone must win. Unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of the score today." Katherine Hock led Mineola with 3 goals. Jamie Carter, Deena Vezo and Mary Warren had two each while Alison Carnabuci and Evalise Rosales each had one goal. So, Glen Cove claimed the conference crown with an 11-1 record. Floral Park was second at 10-2. Mineola was third with a 9-and-3 mark.
Coach Mark Miller's Boys Varsity Lacrosse team had a rough 2 1/2-week stretch in late April and early May. The Mustangs dropped a 16-4 decision to visiting Friends Academy. After trailing only 2-1 in the first quarter, the Mustangs were outscored 7 to 2 and trailed 9 to 3 at half. That's the way the second half went as well. Attackman Drew Wachter scored 2 goals and assisted on 2 more while attackmen Joe Cerulli and Chris Williams had a goal each. Two days later, Mineola played an important league contest against Clarke. The Mustangs led 2-1 after the first quarter. But, the middle two quarters provided their undoing. Clarke outscored Mineola 10 to 1 in the middle of the game to take a lead it would never surrender. The Mustangs did stage a 4th quarter comeback, though, outscoring Clarke 5 to 1. But, that's as far as it went. Clarke took a 12-8 decision. Joe Cerulli led Mineola with 3 goals and 1 assist. Drew Wachter added one goal, but assisted on 4 others. Chris Williams, Paul and Matt Bispo and Steve Ricciardi each had a goal. Pedro Oliveira had 13 saves in goal. Despite the loss, Coach Miller thought his defenders, Rick Dicandia, Danny Mehra and John Murphy, played well. Mineola suffered its 5th straight loss on April 25 when Seaford hit town and rolled-out with an 8-1 victory. While the Mustang defense was playing a strong first half, the offense was stone cold and could not find the net. It was 3-0 Seaford at the half. The visitors tallied 5 more in the second half while Mineola could only manage 1 goal scored by Drew Wachter. Mineola was the guest for Cold Spring Harbor's Senior Recognition weekend and played a Friday night game under the lights. But, Cold Spring Harbor is one of the best teams in the league and showed it. Mineola rallied from a 3-0 deficit and pulled within a goal. A 3-2 before CSH scored again and led 4-2 after the first quarter. But, the home team rang-up 10 unanswered second quarter goals and grabbed a 14-2 lead at the half. Mineola battled the CSH first string for a while in the second half and played well before falling 18-5. Coach Miller said, "although the score doesn't show it, we played pretty good at times against a far better team." Drew Wachter again paced the Mustangs with 4 goals and an assist. Chris Williams had the other goal and goalkeeping Pedro Oliveira had one busy night, making 17 saves. The Mineola losing streak stretched to 7 games in a 13-3 loss to Plainedge. Once again, it was the second quarter that sunk the Mustangs. Plainedge scored 7 straight goals in that period and led 9-2 at halftime. The loss was costly in another way too, seriously damaging the Mustangs chances of making the playoffs. Joe Cerulli and Chris Williams each scored a goal. The Mustangs finally found it way back into the win column. Mineola defeated Jericho 11 to 4. Coach Miller credited the play of defense, citing John Murphy, Rick Dicandia and Danny Mehra along with goalie Pedro Oliveira for shutting out Jericho in the first quarter while Mineola built a 2-0 lead. Mineola grabbed a 5-1 halftime lead and was never threatened. The team's leading scorer, Drew Wachter, again led the way with 5 goals and 2 assists. Joe Cerulli added 2 goals and assisted on 4 more. Paul Bispo, Chris Williams, Steve Ricciardi and Danny Bailey each scored a goal.
The Mineola Varsity Baseball team was moving toward a playoff berth with an important 10 to 6 win over Clarke. Hitting was obviously in evidence that day. Big hits came from Bryan Gallucci, Jon Debrich, Steve Bruno, Adam Tuthill, Tom McPartland and JF Canavan. Gallucci and Pat Leung combined on the mound for the win. Richie Medlock and John Sullivan made big plays in the field. The Mustangs went onto to take 2 of 3 from Roslyn and secure a playoff berth.
The Mineola JV Baseball team hit the midway point of the season with a 6 and 3 record. Coach Barry Silverstein's club notched a 7-4 win at Great Neck North. Mineola stepped off the bus, into the batters box and sent 8 men to the plate in a 3-run first inning. But, the hosts came back with 3 of their own. Mineola bounced back to score 2 in the second inning and never trailed. Coach Silverstein said, "It wasn;t pretty, but, we'll take it." Next game out was close until errors did in the Mustangs. Mineola was tied with Plainedge at 1-1 into the fourth inning. But, Plainedge used those errors to score at will and won 11 to 2. Mineola then dropped a 6 to 5 decision to Plainedge. Mike Kondraciuk pitched well enough to win, according to Coach Silverstein. He went the distance and allowed only 6 hits while striking out 7 batters. Mineola found the win column in the next game, taking Bethpage 10 to 9. The Mustangs scored 4 times in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn a 9-6 deficit into a 10-9 lead. Bethpage loaded the bases in the top of the 7th inning and with two outs, the visitors' cleanup hitter laced a hard ground ball that hit a Bethpage base runner. That's an automatic out and it was the end of the game and a 10-9 Mineola victory. Coach Silverstein said, "We'll take it. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good." The Mineola JV's then notched a 5-0 win over Clarke as Mike Kondraciuk fashioned a 5-hitter and struck out 4. Peter Averaimo got a home run on a squeeze bunt. Danny Guido knocked home two more with a single.
