The Long Island Band and Glee Club, despite the unexpected snow storm on April 1 (1924) went to Mineola to give a concert for the benefit of the Mineola Library.

The Nassau County Gazette and the Mineola News carried the account of the entertainment:

"Music lovers of Mineola to the number of three hundred braved the stormiest

night of the season, Tuesday, to attend the concert at the American Legion Hall

for the Library Association Building Fund by The Sunrise Trail Band and The

Ralph Peters Glee Club of The Long Island Rail Road Company.

More snow covered the ground than from any fall during the winter; a rare

northeast gale and hail mingles with snow made the night anything but desirable

to leave a comfortable home. Delayed trolleys, trains and other causes made some

of the band and Glee Club late and prevented a few from attending at all.

Mrs. Warren Clendenny, chairman of the Library trustees thanked the Band

and Glee Club for their services."

The Abandoned Infant Protection Act was signed into law last year. There are many prospective adoptive families in our state. If you are contemplating not parenting your child, adoption will provide your child with a safe and loving home.

Cadette Girl Scout Troop 1737 and Senior Girl Scout Troop 9783 are again holding a flag retiring ceremony during flag week in June. Members of these troops have organized this ceremony in order that residents of our village can properly dispose of their old, torn or tattered American flags.

Did you ever try to open a bank account with a deposit of $25? Unknown to many of our residents is that New York State Law requires banks to offer lower-cost banking services. All banking institutions in our state, including commercial banks, savings banks and credit unions are required to offer "basic banking accounts, commonly known as "Lifeline Accounts" to any and all customers.

Some of the " highlights" of the Lifeline accounts are:

Opening an Account: You can open your Lifeline account with a deposit of only $25.

Minimum Balance: To keep your Lifeline account open, you will need only one penny on deposit as a minimum balance.

Maintenance Charge:Your financial institution cannot charge you more than $3 per month to maintain this account.

Free Withdrawals: You can make withdrawals from your Lifeline account at least eight times per month at no charge.

No Monthly Minimum Deposit: Your Lifeline account will have no restrictions or penalties as to the minimum number of deposits you make per month.

These Lifeline accounts offer significant savings to consumers. Your financial institution is permitted to require you to make direct deposits of your Social S

security, wages or pension payments. You may also be required to close any other transaction accounts.

If you experience "opposition" from your financial institution when you attempt to set up your Lifeline account please call the Attorney General's Consumer Helpline at (800) 771-7755.
