The Mineola Chiefs 5th grade lacrosse team played both Saturday and Sunday and in both games, the Chiefs came away with a victory.

On Saturday, the Chiefs played an unscheduled game against Bayville, which was supposed to play Floral Park. However Floral Park cancelled on Thursday. The next day, the Bayville coach called the Mineola coach to set up a game.

With all different activities happening on Saturday, Mineola had only 11 players available. Looking for help, the Mineola coach called Rocco Redmond, who is one of the stars of the fourth grade team.

With only two substitutes, Mineola took on Bayville. "It was a nice and cool day. If it was hot, we would have been physically beaten with only two substitutes," said Chiefs coach Billy Delventhal.

Since Mineola is scheduled to play Bayville on May 20, the game provided a good test. Mineola answered the call, dominating the game from the first face-off. Chiefs scorers included Joey Lucien (4 goals), James Tirone (goal), Tyler Omage (goal), and John Magiocco (goal).

Once again, Mineola's defense played well with Ryan Lee, who got his first assist of the year, Timmy DeLuca and Tommy Flynn along with the goaltending of Patrick Delventhal stifled Bayville's attack as the Chiefs came away with a 7-3 victory.

On Sunday, the Chiefs enjoyed the comforts of home against Wantagh/Seaford. Mineola got off to a slow start and after the first period, the score was tied at one. After a stern talk between periods by coach Delventhal, Mineola started to roll, taking the lead for good en route to a 5-2 win.

Mineola scorers were James Tirone and Joey Lucien, who both had two goals, Michael Santandrew (goal, 2 assists) and Anthony Marino (assist).

On attack, Kevin O'Toole, Brendan Reddy and John Small moved the ball very well to keep Wantagh's defense moving all day. Midfielder Sean Dowsett came up big, filling in at the defensive position when another defenseman received a penalty.

The defense, led by Timmy DeLuca, Ryan Lee and Trever Landry (midfielder), who was filling in for Tommy Flynn, controlled the tempo in the Wantagh offensive zone. Goalie Patrick Delventhal made five saves in the win.

Mineola improved to 5-1 and will travel to Floral Pak (1-2) this Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
