On Sunday, the Chiefs 5th grade lacrosse team had their first home game of the season against Huntington. Mineola has never played against Huntington and knew nothing about their team.

Huntington had some players who were so big that they could have played on the junior varsity team at their local high school. Even though the Chiefs were out-sized, the team showed no fear.

Huntington opened up the scoring at the beginning of the second period making the score 1-0. Just before halftime, Mineola's Sean Dowsett made a nice move and scored from about 10 feet out making the score 1-1 at the half. The third period was scoreless with Tommy Flynn, Timmy DeLuca and Ryan Lee on defense, frustrating Huntington's attackman.

The fourth period proved to be a battle to the end. Mineola's midfielders, led by Trever Landry, kept up with the speedy Huntington midfielders. Just with over one minute to go in the game, Mineola was called for a 30-second penalty, creating a six on five situation.

With just two seconds remaining on the penalty, Huntington had a wide-open attackman who scored the winning goal, making the final score Huntington 2 Mineola 1.

The fans from both teams said it was a very exciting game from the start to the finish. The boys on the Mineola team should be very proud of themselves because, with only four substitutes on the sidelines, the team played toe to toe with a very fast and physical Huntington team. Tyler Omage, John Magliocco, Anthony Marino, Michael Santandrew and Kevin O'Toole helped out on midfield with Brendan Reedy, John Small and James Tirone on attack. Patrick Delventhal again had a very busy day in goal and came up with 12 saves. The next game is away at Deer Park on April 22.
