Last year - Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Doreen Banks was often asked by active senior residents within her town to continue Funday Monday at Bar Beach. In response, the councilwoman suggested that seniors be allowed to swim at the town's indoor pool at Evergreen Avenue off of Denton Avenue in New Hyde Park. The program was started and received rave reviews - specially from those with arthritis who cannot exercise in more traditional ways.

This year - without notice - the program was cancelled. In response, Councilwoman Banks introduced a resolution that waived fees for seniors on Mondays during the hours of 1-3 p.m. when pool usage is at a weekly low. Before the town board could pass the resolution, an amendment was offered by Supervisor May Newburger, that the program would be underwritten by Frank Castagna, owner of the Americana, Manhasset.

"That is the best of both worlds," said Councilwoman Banks. "Revenues will be increased, thanks to Mr. Castagna's generosity and seniors who were greatly benefited by the swim and exercise programs, will be able to continue to enjoy the pool." Town of North Hempstead Seniors who have interest in the program are asked to submit their names to Anne Croce, commissioner of community services.
