On Sunday afternoon, the Mineola PAL Chiefs Fifth-Grade team opened their season at North Shore. After losing the last two years, Mineola came into the contest as the underdog.
Mineola started the scoring early, however, with a quick goal by attackman Joe Lucien. North Shore finally settled down for the rest of the first period, but Mineola enjoyed a 1-0 lead after the first.
Just before halftime, though, North Shore, after taking numerous shots on goal, finally scored, tying the game at one.
The third period was a battle as Mineola defense came up big in not letting North Shore's quick attackmen score. Toward the end of the period, Mineola's midfielder, Trever Landry, scored from 20 yards out, making the score 2-1.
In the beginning of the fourth period, Mineola received two penalties, creating a six on four situation. However, Mineola held North Shore to just on e shot on goal during that time.
Another two penalties against Mineola with just over a minute to go made the game very exciting. Mineola's defense once again held strong as they stopped a six on five situation to end the game. Mineola completed a 2-1 victory.
Tommy Flynn led the defense with Timmy DeLuca and Ryan Lee right behind him. Patrick Delventhal had 11 saves in goal. Midfielders were John Magliocco, Sean Dowsett, Anthony Marino, Tyler Omage, Shawn Wachter and Kevin O'Toole. On attack were Michael Santandrew, John Small, James Tirone and Brendan Reedy.
Be sure to come out this Sunday at the Hampton Street School field to watch the fifth-grade team take on Huntington.
