The Mineola Athletic Association will be holding its annual Opening Day Parade on Saturday, April 21, 2001.

The parade will assemble at Wilson Park at 9:30 AM and proceed at 10:30 AM to Union Avenue north to Westbury Avenue; west to Roslyn Road; north to Jericho Turnpike; west to Mineola Blvd.; south to Second street; east to Willis Avenue and ending at the Mineola Little League Complex.

It is anticipated that the Opening Day ceremonies will commence at the Little League Field at 11:30 AM.

The Village of Mineola will be hosting a series of master gardener programs from April through June in conjunction with Cornell Cooperative Extension. These programs are free and open to all of our residents. The schedule for these events are:

On Wednesday, April 11, the Community Center will once again host an evening of dance instruction for 'tweens and teens. There will be two separate groups led by instructors Tim Almeida and his partner, Dahlia. This is a great opportunity to learn all the latest hip-hop and break dancing steps. The instruction will run from 7:00PM- 9:30 PM with free admission to all residents possessing a Leisure Pass and $1.00 for each of their guests. Bottled water and soda will be available for $.50 each. Please wear loose fitting clothing and sneakers. Be sure to be on time not to miss any of the warm-ups.

PLANNING BOARD

There will be a meeting of the Village of Mineola Planning Board on Monday, April 9, 2001 at 7:30 PM at the Village Hall 155 Washington Avenue Mineola. The applications to be discussed at this meeting are:

121 Roslyn Road
Application for variance to maintain a two family dwelling with insufficient lot area and insufficient parking spaces.
30 Fairfield Avenue
Application for variance to construct a new one family dwelling with insufficient front yard setback and to construct a porch which exceeds permitted encroachment in a front yard setback.
257 East 2nd Street
Application for variance to construct office space within an existing warehouse with insufficient parking.

At the scheduled meeting of the Planning Board, reserved decisions from the previous meeting, if any, will or may be acted upon.

The Board of Zoning and Appeals of the Village of Mineola will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at 8:00 PM at the Village Hall 155 Washington Avenue, Mineola upon the following applications:

The public is invited to attend and those desiring to be heard will be given the opportunity.

The return of the warmer weather often brings children outdoors, playing sports or using items such as scooters, bikes, and roller blades. Although outside activities are fun, they can put children at risk of injury. Parents can learn how to minimize risk, and prevent and treat common injuries at Winthrop-University Hospital's free program, "Safe & Healthy Kids: Preventing & Managing Emergencies," on Wednesday, April 25. The program will be held at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola. It will begin with registration at 6:30 PM, followed by the lecture at 7:00 PM.

Three of Winthrop's experts, Lucy Weinstein, MD, Medical Coordinator for Injury prevention; Judy Jax, RN, Trauma Coordinator; and Gia Raponi, CPR Instructor, will discuss the latest information on safety issues. They will also provide a demonstration of basic first aid and CPR. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.

The Library of Congress, will make available for free, through its Talking Book Program, a four track cassette player. These are available to those who are unable to read because of a visual or physical handicap.

A Long Island organization, Choice Magazine Listening (CML) selects and records memorable writings from over 100 leading magazines. Every other month, the organization supplies eight hours of unabridged articles, fiction and poetry read by professional voices and recorded on four-track cassette tapes.

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease that robs women of bone density. Symptoms such as pain, loss of height and fractures, often appear after the disease is in an advanced stage. That's why it's important to learn about prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment methods. Women can learn the latest information about osteoporosis at Winthrop-University Hospital's Women's Health Forum free lecture, "Osteoporosis: The Bone Robber" on Wednesday, April 18. The program will begin with registration at 6:30 PM, followed by the lecture at 7:00. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola.

Two of Winthrop's experts in the field of osteoporosis will discuss the latest advances in the prevention and treatment of the disease. Linda Radler, MPT, PT, Director of Physical Therapy, will discuss and demonstrate the benefits of proper body mechanics and weight bearing exercises.

Jane Moore, RN, BSN, Clinical Research Coordinator of Winthrop's Bone Mineral Research Center, will discuss new trends in treatment, current research, and new medications on the horizon.
