When results from last Tuesday's Village of Mineola election came in, they were hardly a surprise. Mayor John P. Colbert, Deputy Mayor Lou Santosus and Trustee Elizabeth Conlon were re-elected for another two-year term.

The election differed from other heated ones in the past since it was uncontested. The election of the three officials was simply a matter of procedure. Still, residents were encouraged to vote and the three candidates celebrated their victories as they look forward to another two years in office.

Mayor Colbert and Deputy Mayor Lou Santosus congratulate each other at Cugini's restaurant on their succussful re-election bid.

Trustee Linda Fairgrieve, a winner in last year's election, congratulated Elizabeth Conlon, who was re-elected for a fourth consecutive term.

At a reception following the election for the Village Party at Cugini's restaurant, Santosus expressed his gratitude to all of the supporters. Mayor Colbert also thanked all of his supporters and congratulated Santosus, who he said would continue to be deputy mayor, and Conlon.

The Hometown Party had a victory celebration for supporters and the Italian American Civic Association, where they recognized those who put forth time in the party's effort to re-elect Conlon.

Colbert, first elected as a village trustee in 1989, was appointed deputy mayor in 1992. He became mayor in June, 1994 and was first elected to the post in March of 1995. His win in this year's election marks his fourth consecutive successful bid for mayor.

Santosus, a former Mineola Fire Chief, was appointed to the trustee position in 1994 after having served in the role from 1983 to 1989. With this election victory, Santosus has now also run four straight successful bids for village board.

Conlon was first elected to the board in 1995 and will be beginning her fourth consecutive two-year term.

The total numbers of voters in this election did not reflect the accurate number of those who would have gone to the polls had the election been contested. In addition, election day was the same day of the funeral for Corpus Christi Parish Pastor Fr. Ken Winkler.

The official election results showed Mayor Colbert with 644 votes; Deputy Mayor Lou Santosus collected 621 votes and Trustee Conlon collected 595.

By comparison, last year's election, which was contested, had 4,522 votes total compared to the 1,860 this election.

The mayor said that this past year, the current board, which consists of himself, Santosus, Conlon, Warnecke and Fairgrieve, have formed a team and will continue to work together on behalf of the residents of the village.

Conlon had said when it was announced there would be an uncontested election that the village would benefit since a heated, controversial election would have just gotten in the way of what the village board needs to accomplish.

The mayor cited the downtown revitalization project as well the reconstruction of the Mineola Boulevard bridge as upcoming village projects.
