At least 48 hours before treating a lawn or yard with certain pesticides, commercial applicators will have to provide a written warning notice to abutting properties within 150 feet of the application.
In addition, people who apply their own lawn pesticides will have to flag the treated areas, the way lawn care companies are already required to do.
If non-toxic pesticides or certain low toxic pesticides are employed then advance notice is not required.
Other exceptions to the 48 hour notification requirement are:
1. spot treatments of areas less than nine square feet
2. spot treatments regarding stinging insects
3. use of granular pesticides
However, all commercial lawn pesticide applications, including granular pesticides, still require "flagging." The notification provisions for commercial and residential lawn applications take effect March 1.

Long Island's history would not be complete without one knowing about the many lighthouses that existed throughout the "island."
The first lighthouse which was fully funded by the federal government was built in 1796 at Montauk Point. This lighthouse was renovated in 1860 and was the last Long Island lighthouse to "lose its keepers" which was in 1987.
At one time in excess of 20 lighthouses or "light ships" were located on "the island" or nearby waters. A website www.longislandlighthouses.com has information regarding Long Island's Lighthouses: Past and Present.
Urinary incontinence is not exclusive to older women. Younger women often experience the condition as the result of childbirth, surgery, or a variety of other reasons. Although treatment is available, many do not seek help because of embarrassment. In an effort to educate women about treatment options that could improve their quality of life, Winthrop-University Hospital's Women's health forum will present a free lecture, "Urinary Incontinence: Does it Have to Change Your Life?" on Wednesday, March 21. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Blvd. in Mineola, at the corner of Second Street. It will begin with registration and refreshments at 6:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 7 p.m.
Allan S. Klapper, MD, director of Urogynecology & Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at Winthrop, will provide a general overview on urinary incontinence, as well as the latest information on surgical and non-surgical treatment options. There will also be a demonstration of the latest products and techniques used to improve the condition, including the Neotonus chair, which is designed to help strengthen the pelvis muscles.
The Women's Health Forum is coordinated by Women's Health Services, part of the Institute for Family Care. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Pre-registration is required. Please call 1-888-53-WOMEN to reserve your place.
