Corpus Christi Boys Fifth Grade Basketball team went outside their region for the first time this season to play in a tournament at St. Vincent de Paul of Elmont and came away winning both games this past weekend to put themselves in the championship game next Sunday.
The first game pitted Corpus Christi against Our Lady of Mercy with our boys winning by a score of 35-20. Jimmy Murtha led all scorers with 11 points and Tommy Flynn followed that up with eight points. Frankie Lao came off the bench and gave the team a lift as he replaced Chris Brostek who came out with an injured left ankle.
The second game for Corpus Christi was against an aggressive St. Aidan's team who had defeated the home team of St. Vincents the day before. Corpus Christi started slow as St. Aidan's smothering defense kept Corpus Christi in check for much of the first quarter. During this time Michael Diglio who has been the quiet force for this team all season kept them in the game as he scored the first six points en route to a season high 12 points. T.J. Gessner scored six points and controlled the offense as he called several plays which resulted in baskets as the offense started to roll. Chris Brostek came back from his injury and played very effectively and contributed with four points. Brendan Reedy again showed his scoring touch with a nice basket for two points and Alex Lopes had several assists. Final score for this game was 30-12 and the key was not letting St. Aidan's get second chances, as Tommy Flynn was a monster on the boards.
