The Mineola High School Girls basketball players found out that hard work pays off. The frustrations of an up and down season often resulted in good things. The girls hoops squad nailed down a playoff spot in the Nassau County Class B tournament with a 55-48 win at Plainedge in the final regular season game. Senior point guard Katherine Hock led the Lady Mustangs with 14 points. Seven different players scored in the crucial win. Senior guard Ashley O'Neill, Junior Forward Maureen Cloghessy and Sophomore Forward Kristin McNally scored 9 points each. Mineola's two junior centers Patty Ober and Cassandra Burke each scored 6 points while Sophomore guard Nicole Tsabasis had 2 points. Prior to that regular season ending win, the Lady Mustangs had sustained a pair of tough losses. A much larger Valley Stream South team handed a 50-34 home loss. The Mustangs had no one to battle South's 6-foot center Jen Cully. She put up 18 points and pulled down 17 rebounds. Ashley O'Neill was the only Mustang in double figures that night with 10 points. Cassandra Burke added 8 points. That game was followed by 42-38 loss at Bethpage. Mineola led by 2 points after one quarter and by one point after three quarters. But, the home court proved to be too much. Maureen Cloghessy and Ashley O'Neill led Mineola with 10 points each. But, the regular season ended with that win at Plainedge and it was off to the playoffs. The girls junior varsity notched a 36-28 win over Valley Stream South. Liz Terezo placed the offense with 17 points while Melissa Hock added 9. Diana Crowe hit a pair of three pointers to help Mineola grab a lead at halftime. Coach Christine Wiedman recognized Denise Fitzpatrick, Shaleira Smith and Theresa Dolan for their stellar defense. The Mineola Boys Varsity basketball team knocked off Glen Cove 52-45 behind a 26-point night from Senior Guard Dave Terezo. No other Mustangs scored in double figures. But, a suffocating defense in the fourth quarter held Glen Cove to six points and sealed the win. In its final home game of the season, Mineola staged a furious fourth quarter rally, but fell short and lost to West Hempstead 58-52. Senior guard Danny Bailey paced the Mustangs with 24 points. Dave Terezo added 12 and in the final game of the season, Mineola succumbed to Bellmore JFK's big fourth quarter in a 66-54 loss. JFK outscored the Mustangs 30-16 in that final quarter. Dave Terezo led Mineola with 14 points. Rich Medlock was next with 13 points while Eric Wooten added 10 points. Mineola ended its season in Conference B-II win a record of 5-7.
