Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell announced the passage of two bills in the Assembly on Jan. 29 to improve health care and insurance coverage for women. The measures would expand insurance coverage to help detect osteoporosis, breast cancer, cervical cancer, and requires coverage for annual mammographies after age 40, among other initiatives.

Úquot;These proposals are instrumental in ensuring that women receive the best and most complete health care coverage,Úquot; said O'Connell, ranking minority member of the Assembly's Health Committee.

The first bill, known as the Women's Health and Wellness Act, would amend current insurance law and decrease the required age at which insurance companies are mandated to provide insurance coverage. Women aged 40 and above instead of 50 and above would be eligible for that coverage.

The second bill aims to encourage early detection and prevention of several diseases known to affect women. Coverage would be required for bone density screenings, cervical cytology screenings, and mammograms for all insured women in New York State over the age of 40. It would also prohibit the charging of annual deductibles of annual coinsurance for mammograms or cervical cytology screenings.

Úquot;I am glad to see that the Assembly has chosen women's health to be one of the first issues addressed this session,Úquot; O'Connell said. Úquot;It is my hope that both houses of the Legislature will come to an agreement on these bills very soon so women can begin to receive the insurance benefits they deserve.Úquot;
