The Mineola High School varsity wrestling team pinned defeates on four more opponents and nailed down the Conference 3-A Championship. The string began with the Mustang Grapplers trampling Glen Cove 42-19. Steven Riccardi got the Mustangs their first three points by winning his match 7-5. Joe Cerulli followed with an 8-2 win while Hernado Gauto won by technical fall. Ken Chin, Joe Selby and Andrew Montanez followed by pinning their opponents. Adam Minsky decisioned his Glen Cove foe 7-4. Raul Gonzalez then capped the match by coming away with a 7-5 win in double overtime. Coach Dan Guido named Riccardi, Montanez and Minsky as the outstanding wrestlers for the match.
Two nights later, the Mustang Wrestlers clinched the conference title with a 36-26 win at Plainedge. Eric Wong chalked up Mineola's first pin of the meet by defeating his opponent in 30 seconds. Joe Cerulli followed with a victory by decision. Hernando Gauto again obliterated his opponent and won by a technical fall. Paul Bispo and Dan Harvey followed with pins. Joe Selby sandwiched in his win on points while Craig Gunder pinned another Plainedge wrestler.
The next day, the Mineola Grapplers beat both Manhasset and Lawrence at the Wantagh tournament. The Mustangs manhandled Manhasset 63 to 5 and locked-up Lawrence 37 to 18. Coach Guido pointed to Wong, Riccardi and Minsky as the outstanding wrestlers.
The Mineola girls varsity basketball team dropped a 52-35 decision to visiting Plainedge. After holding a 22-20 halftime lead, the Lady Mustangs went ice cold and couldn't get anything going in the second half. Plainedge owned the second half, outscoring Mineola 32 to 13. Senior guards Ashley O'Neill and Katherine Hock scored 8 and 7 points respectively. Sophomore forward Kristen McNally added seven points. The loss dropped Mineola's League IV mark to 3 and 2.
The Mineola boys bowling teams took it on the chin twice. Carle Place, one of the strongest teams on Long Island, beat the Mustang Pinmen 11-0. Vito Errico had the high games for Mineola with a 233 and a 174. The junior varsity lost by the same score. Chris Festa had the high game with a 169 while Keith Masso rolled games of 155 and 151. The next day, Mineola dropped both varsity and junior varsity matches to Sewanhaka by 11-0 scores. Despite the varsity's loss, Coach Bob Young said Vito Errico and Joe Tiseo showed great effort. Errico bowled games of 220, 211 and 178. Tiseo had games of 168 and 190. The high game for the Mineola junior varsity again came from Keith Masso, with a 168.
Mineola High School junior bowler Christina Schulze was named Nassau County Athlete of the Week in Newsday's Hi-Five High School Sports Publication. Sixteen-year-old Christina was the subject of a full-page profile with a color photograph of her bowling. Christina says she's interested in pursuing a career in psychology.
Last December, Mineola High School lost a great man and educator when Assistant Principal Reggie Carter passed away. Reggie was a basketball All-American at St. John's University, and went on to play in the NBA for the New York Knicks. This Friday, Feb. 2, the Mineola High School boys and girls basketball teams will play their games in memory of Reggie Carter at the Mineola High School gymnasium. The girls varsity will play at 3:30 against Roslyn High School, followed by the girls junior varsity game against Roslyn at 5:15. The evening concludes with the Mineola boys varsity squad playing Locust Valley High School in a 7 p.m. game. A special dedication will be held during the game. The cost of admission for each game will be $2 for adults and $1 for students under 18. All proceeds will go toward the Reggie Carter Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Reggie Carter Scholarship is awarded to a graduating Mineola High School student in June.
