The Mineola High School boys varsity basketball team ran its record in Conference B-II to 3 and 2 with a 67-64 overtime win over visiting Valley Stream North. Dave Terezo led the Mustangs with 17 points and six steals. Drew Wachter added 13 points while Dan Bailey contributed 12 points. That victory gave the Mineola boys a sweep for the evening. The Mustangs' JV team was also a winner over Valley Stream North, a 51-43 decision. Jerell Harrison put 17 points while Matt Bispo scored 12 points and Rattan Kamboj added six.
The Mineola girls varsity hoops team is now 3 and 1 in Nassau Conference IV play. The Lady Mustangs opened league play with a 34-31 win over Bethpage. Next came a 58-50 road win over arch-rival Lynbrook. Mineola snapped twine on 10 of 12 three-point shots. Our of those were hit by senior guard Ashley O'Neill, who finished with a career-high 19 points. Senior guard Katherine Hock and sophomore forward Kristin McNally each canned three three-pointers. McNally finished with a career high 13 points while Hock added 11 points. Mineola absorbed its first loss of the conference season at Valley Stream South. That was followed by 43-33 home win over Clarke. Ashley O'Neill and Kristin McNally led the Mustangs with 13 points apiece. The Lady Mustangs are now 7 and 3 overall.
The Mineola Mustangs wrestling team came up with its biggest win of the season to this point. The Mustangs upset number-one-ranked Wantagh in a league 3A match. The match may have hinged on the efforts of Ken Chin and Adam Minsky, who both pinned their opponents. Other Mustangs who contributed to the 35-24 win over Wantagh with wins were Eric Wong, Steve Ricciardi, Joe Cerulli, Dan Harvey, Joe Selby and Craig Gunder.
On the lanes, the Mineola boys bowling team has continued to improve. The varsity bowlers defeated Roslyn 8-3 behind high games of 176 and 176 from Vito Errico and Joseph Tiseo's 193. The junior varsity dropped an 8-3 decision to Roslyn. Keith Masso rolled the high games for Mineola, with a 151 and 169. Great Neck South edged the Mustang varsity bowlers 6-5 while the Mineola junior varsity won by that same score. Peter Marson's 188 and Vito Errico's games of 170 and 219 along with Joseph Tiseo's games of 190 and 235 led the Mustangs in the narrow loss. The JV win was paced by seventh grader Anthony Tretolo, who rolled games of 158, 222 and 174. Mineola also lost a varsity match to North Shore 11-nothing, while the Mustang JV team lost 8-3. Brian Sacs rolled a 237 and 192 for Mineola, while Peter Marson had a 177 and Vito Errico had scores of 205 and 236. Anthony Tretolo bowled a 179 for the junior varsity. Keith Masso added a 164 and Luis Pramantano bowled a 156.
Mineola High School Senior All-County soccer player Katherine Hock is one of 150 outstanding senior female athletes to be honored at the 10th Annual Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration on Sunday, Feb. 4. Katherine was nominated for the Debbie Whittemore High School Leadership Award by Mineola varsity soccer coach Christine Wiedman.
The event is an annual celebration recognizing girls and women who have made significant contributions to athletics. The program will include the Debbie Whittemore High School Senior Leadership Award ceremony. The keynote speaker is Elaine Roque, a three-time collegiate All-American volleyball player, a 1996 US Olympic Team alternate and a star on the professional beach volleyball circuit. The program will also include the presentation of a $500 scholarship sponsored by Fleet Bank. The scholarship will be presented to one female athlete who best displays the qualities of leadership, service and academic excellence.
