Corpus Christi boys fifth grade basketball team hosted its first annual Holiday Tournament on Sunday, Dec. 31 and won both games to bring home the Tournament Trophy. The first game of the tournament pitted St. Joseph against host team Corpus Christi with the home team coming out on top 29-24. Again Corpus Christi had a balanced scoring attack as 8 of 10 players ended up in the scoring column. Tommy Flynn led Corpus Christi with 7 points and T. J. Gessner followed with 6 points. Michael Diglio started the scoring for Corpus Christi with two early buckets for 4 points. Alex Lopes played some aggressive defense and contributed to the offense with two points.
The second game of the tourney had Our Lady of Hope going against St. Aidans. It was a close game all the way through, that saw the lead change hands several times until the end when St. Aidans came out on the high end of a 34-29 score. This brought up the championship game of Corpus Christi and St. Aidans in the rematch of a tough fought game earlier in the season. Corpus Christi took the early lead in this game with Jimmy Murtha scoring early and often as he finished with a game high 10 points. Brendan Reedy showed his scoring touch as he scored a basket in both games of the tourney. At the half, it was 17-10 Corpus Christi, but St. Aidans came on strong in he second half to cut the lead to 2. Terry Mooney and Chris Brostek gave Corpus Christi a much needed energy boost as Terry scored 4 points and Chris 2 points, Carmine Sarno and Frankie Lao were key contributors as they assisted on several late baskets. With 9 seconds left, St. Aidans had a chance to tie as they went to the line to shoot four shots, but missed the front end of a one and one. T.J. Gessner came down with the rebound and held on to win the game and tournament 27-25.
