The U.S. Savings Bonds website is www.savingsbonds.gov. Featured is information about I Bonds, Series EE/E Bonds and Series HH/H Bonds.

The Earnings Rate of I Bonds is a combination of two separate rates. A "fixed" rate of return and a semi-annual inflation rate. The yield on the I Bonds is adjusted for changes in the Consumer Price Index. The current interest rate on I Bonds is 6.49 percent.

Earnings on I Bonds are added to the bond each month and interest is compounded semi-annually.

I Bonds are meant to be longer-term investments. If you "cash in" an I Bond within the first five years; you will forfeit three months earnings.

The Mineola Historical Society has a display in the Village Hall regarding the Mineola Skating Rink.

The "rink" opened on July 2, 1934 in the former cow exhibition hall on the fairgrounds in Mineola.

The popularity of the "rink" increased year after year. In 1937, the rink attracted 2, 000 skaters to its season opening program. In 1948, the rink served more than 90,000 skaters.

The Girl Scout Troop from Corpus Christi took lessons.

The Mineola Skating Rink sponsored 60 skating clubs throughout its history, ie. Sundial Rollers, Silver Streaks, the Zephyrs, the Collegiateers, the Rainbow Rollers, etc.

The success of the rink was due to Earl Van Horn and his first wife Inez, who themselves were skaters and their expertise was recognized in 1994 when they were inducted into the USA Roller Skating Coaches Hall of Fame.

The rink was torn down on Aug. 17, 1960 to allow for the construction of the Nassau County Office Building and Parking lot on the southwest corner of Old Country Road and County Seat Drive.

If you have any remembrances of the rink, the Village Historian Neil Young would love to hear from you. His address is 155 Washington Avenue. Thank you.

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, the Mineola PAL Roller Hockey Program kicked of their season at the Wilson Park Roller Rink. The program has over 20 teams and 600 children participating. Games run most weekday evenings between 6pm and 9 p.m. and on the weekends from noon until 6 p.m. We would like to wish all the players good luck and an injury-free season.
