Now that the fall high school athletic season is in the books, many Mineola High School athletes, who displayed their prowess, were selected for postseason honors. The highly successful volleyball coaches in Nassau County with an All-County selection. Senior Ashley O'Neill was honored by the volleyball coaches in Nassau County with an All-County selection. Additionally, seniors Callahan and Papadimitrios were chosen as All-County Honorable Mention honorees. Another key member of the senior class on Coach Lynn Klein's team, Kristen Buglione, was named All-Conference. Coach Paul Pereira's boys varsity soccer team also scooped-up some hardware. Junior forward Jose Lopez scored 19 goals during the season and was honored with an All-County selection. Three other seniors were also chosen by Nassau County coaches as All-Conference. They are Jason Carlos, Justin Clingo and Jonathan Debrich. The Mineola girls varsity soccer team, coached by Christie Wiedman, had three ladies selected for honors. Senior Katherine Hock was named All-County by the area coaches. Because of her equally strong effort in the classroom Hock was named All-Scholastic. Junior Danielle Adams was chosen to the All Class-B team and senior Trish Gettler was named All-Conference. Rounding out the Mustangs named for postseason honors was one player from Coach Dan Guido's varsity football team. Senior Raul Gonzalez was voted All-Conference by the coaches from Conference III.

Coach Wiedman summed-up her varsity soccer season as extremely successful. She said she is very proud of her players for playing the game the way it should be played. Wiedman noted that her Lady Mustangs controlled the game 90 percent of the time. During those times, the coach said her players looked for good passing options, support and the ever-so-wonderful "up, back and through" style of play. While the team's record was not what she had hoped, Wiedman complimented her girls for using wall passing to go around defenders and for dropping back passes for shots on goal. The coach went on to say "we attacked by crossing beautiful balls across the 18-yard box. It was wonderful to see them play soccer and not kickball." Coach Wiedman also applauded her team's award winners... senior Katherine Hock as All-County and Scholar Athlete, junior Danielle Adams for All Class-B and senior Trisha Gettler for being chosen All-Conference.

It sounds as if Coach Wiedman will have plenty of help coming from this year's Junior Varsity team. As he always does, Coach Frank Massaro molds his teams into winners. This fall was certainly no exception. Massaro began the pre-season with barely enough players to field a team. By the time the dust had settled, the junior Lady Mustangs had compiled an admirable record of 14 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie, which included going undefeated in the conference. Massaro said, "The team displayed tremendous improvement and great heart, as it won 6 one-goal games." Greatly responsible for those close wins was the defense, anchored by goalkeeper Ally Murphy, sweeper Margaret Phelan, stopper Denise Fitzpatrick and fullbacks Caitlin Callahan and Patty Munson. Massaro pointed out that group was also responsible for the team's 9 shutouts this season. The coach also pointed out the strong play of his midfielders. He said the main workload was handled by center halfback Angelina Martinez, right halfback Maryanne Georgeou, left halfback Arielle Cristobal, plus jacks-of-all-trades Joanna Canning, Nikole Tsabasis and Alison Carnabuci. Massaro named strikers Theresa Dolan, Ashley McAree and Rachel Cohen, who led the team in scoring. He also applauded timely goal-scoring from Filomena Cunha and Melissa Dekanchuk. Massaro said in closing "with a 1-0 victory over Bethpage and a 2-1 win over West Hempstead, the Lady Mustangs completed a season for which they should all be proud.
