The old Queens County Courthouse stood at the corner of Jericho Tpke. and Herricks Rd. It was built in 1787 and the first capital case was that of a poor black slave who was accused of burning down her master's house. The prosecutor was none other than Aaron Burr, later vice president of the United States. The woman was hanged, the first of many to suffer a similar fate. In those days people came from miles around to watch a hanging. It was like a day's outing.
