The Town of North Hempstead sponsored its first of what participants feel will become a standard Columbus Day Tournament. This tournament combined the club teams in the surrounding areas for what turned out to be a great weekend to play soccer.
Mineola Magic U-12 girls travel team, part of the Mineola Athletic Association, was placed in the Bronze Division and considered an underdog. After two days and four soccer matches later, Magic rose to a new height in its short, five-season career. It all started with a game against the Port Washington Blazers. Magic held an even score through the first half, when Julia Yan of Mineola scored. Next, Alexandra Kain, Maggie Garcia and Maria Jetter added goals for a 4-0 victory. Assists were contributed by Kerri O'Connell, Maggie Hoban, Lynn Franciotti and Nicole DeStefano. Throughout the match, outstanding midfield plays were made by Jetter, Kelly Munson, Grace Martorella, Maggie Garcia, Christine McEnery (Magic's newest player).

One of Mineola's successful team's in the North Hempstead Cup soccer tournament.

Great defensive saves were made by Jennifer Port, Kelly LaRose, Alyson Laverty, and, of course, goaltender Alyssa Glenn.
The next game was again Three Village Thunder and this contest was also a 5-0 shutout. In this game, Mineola's Nicole DeStefano started the rally, followed by two goals by Glenn and a goal by Franciotti. In the same game, the midfield did an outstanding job feeding the forwards and assisting the defense.
The last victory of the day was against the Oceanside Ruckus. In this game, Allie Kain and Grace Martorella each had two goals. Mineola's midfield assisted most goals with their running and kicking power, while playing solid defense.
The team played together and has an outstanding day with everyone including Marisa Jetter, Kerri O'Connell, Allie Kain, Grace Martorella, Julie Yan, Kelly Munson, Lynn Franciotti, Nicole DeStefano, Jennifer Port, Kelly LaRose, Maggie Hoban, Maggie Garcia, Alyson Laverty, Christine McEnery and Alysson Glenn. Sunday was a little different with an early game and cold weather. Magic was slow to get started and as it turned out, suffered their only loss of the tournament. This time Mineola was unable to hold off Glen Cover Starz and took second place in the tournament. A special thanks to the town, villages and volunteers for a great weekend of soccer.
