The next meeting of the board of trustees will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue. This meeting, to which the public is invited, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Starting on Monday, Oct. 2, the new hours of operation for the Village Hall will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Justice Court hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Women's Health Services, in cooperation with Winthrop Radiology Associates, PC will provide mammograms at no out-of-pocket expenses on two evenings and one Saturday in October. Participants will receive a clinical breast examination and general breast health practices. Participants are encouraged to obtain a referral from their physicians if their insurance requires one.

The screenings are on the following days and times at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard:

Tuesday, Oct. 10 - 4-7 p.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 11 - 4-7 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 14 - 9 a.m.-noon

The American Cancer Society is holding its annual fund-raising walk at Jones Beach State Park on Sunday, Oct. 15. This "walk" raises funds for breast cancer research and heightens public awareness of prevention, self-examination and treatment. This "walk" is from 9 to 11 a.m. on the boardwalk.

PACE and the Max Foundation invite the public to attend an "Evening of Art" at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road, Rockville Centre on Saturday, Oct. 14.

The preview is at 7 p.m. and the auction starts at 8 p.m. There is a $10 per person admission charge.

Arthritis is an inflammatory disease of the joints, which affects more than 37 million people in our country. At best uncomfortable and at worst debilitating, the disease is capable of impairing the quality of life for many. That's why it's important for those who suffer from arthritis to remain knowledgeable about the disease and advances in treatments. Winthrop University Hospital's Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology will present a free lecture, "Understanding Arthritis and Its Treatments" on Thursday, Oct. 19. The lecture will be co-sponsored by the Long Island Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. It will be held at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola, at the corner of Second Street. Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 7 p.m.

Steven Carsons, MD, chief of Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology, and Gary Rosenblum DO, director of Geriatric Rheumatology, will discuss the symptoms and characteristics of the major forms of arthritis. They will also address new medical approaches to treatment.
