On Sept. 6 our schools will be reopening. As the village has done in the past, village employees will be placing signage near the schools, which will remind all that the schools have reopened.
Please, when driving anywhere in our village, be mindful that the children are back in school and please do not pass a school bus with flashing red lights.
Registration for the Adult Education Programs will be held at the High School, 10 Armstrong Road, Garden City Park on the evenings of Oct. 2, 4 & 5 between 6 to 9 p.m. The adult education classes are open to the general public; however, Mineola School District residents will be given first preference.
The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is on Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. This meeting will be held at 155 Washington Avenue. The public is invited to attend.
As a result of the work being done by the New York State Department of Transportation on the Long Island Expressway HOV lane, the LIRR will be suspending service on the Oyster Bay Branch on Sept. 16 and 17.
Busing will be provided on the south side of the Mineola train station on both dates.
Many of the parking spaces on the south side of the station will be utilized to accommodate the buses. In order to reserve these spaces, the LIRR will be barricading them starting on Thursday, Sept. 14 at approximately 4 p.m. and they will remain in that condition till Monday, Sept. 18, at approximately 3 a.m.
A panel of Winthrop-University Hospital experts at a free Health Update will answer questions concerning senior health for seniors on Wednesday, Sept. 13. The program will begin with blood pressure checks at 1:15 p.m. followed by the formal presentation at 1:45 p.m. This program will be held at the Mineola Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue, Mineola.
Three of Winthrop's experts in geriatric care, Lucy O. Macina MD, Chief of the Division of Geriatrics, and attending physicians, Jeffrey Berger MD and Maria Carney MD will answer questions about medical problems in ones later years. Commencing on Sept. 9 the Mineola Memorial Library, located adjacent to the Village Hall at 155 Washington Avenue, will change its hours to the following:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday - 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday - 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Saturday - 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
The Library will be offering "Toddler Story time" for ages 2 - 3 each Friday 11 - 11:30 a.m. beginning the week of Sept. 25 and ending Dec. 9. They will also be offering "Preschool Story time" for ages 3 to 5 each Monday from 1:30 - 2 p.m. Please visit or call the library for information. In person registration begins Sept. 7 and proof of age of the child is required at registration.
The Board of Zoning and Appeals of the Village of Mineola will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. at the Village Hall located at 155 Washington Avenue, upon the application of:
1. Mary Jane Miles- 139 Walker Road - Application for a Zoning variance to maintain a one-car garage with insufficient set backs contrary to Chapter 30, Article 7, Section 30.75 (A)
2. Altmark Properties, Inc. - 202 Jericho Tpke. Applications for a Zoning variance to construct rear addition to existing nonconforming commercial print shop with insufficient off-street parking in a B-1 district contrary to Chapter 30, Article 3, Section 30.31 (A) and Chapter 30, Article 1, Section 30.6.
On Tuesday, Sept. 12, Boy Scout Troop 45 will be starting its 2000/2001 Scouting season. Troop 45 meets every Tuesday during the school year at the First Presbyterian Church on Main Street in Mineola. The Troop's yearly activities include camping trips, long distance hikes, special events like hockey and baseball games, swimming and basketball nights, community service projects, their big Father's Day Pancake Breakfast, and summer camp. The meetings start at 7:30 p.m. and Scoutmaster Steve Grosskopf invites all boys who might be interested in their Scouting program to stop down at a troop meeting. Chartered in 1921, Troop 45, in 2001 will have been serving Mineola boys for 80 years. In preparation for their big 80th Anniversary Dinner scheduled for February 2001, they are hoping to make contact with as many Troop 45 Family Alumni as possible. Joseph Chiofolo MD, director of Winthrop-University Hospital's Blood Bank recently stated "Long Island is currently experiencing its worst blood shortage in 15 years."
There is a critical shortage of types O and B. Please consider donating blood on Friday, September 8th from 7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Blvd.
All blood donors will be entered into a prize drawing for overnight accommodations and breakfast for two at the Long Island Marriott.

The Mineola Athletic Association under 11 boys soccer team, Mineola Rough Riders won first place in their division in the Long Island Junior Soccer League. The team had a record of 8 wins and 1 loss. The Rough Riders also won the Sportsmanship Award in their division. This award is based on points given by the referee after each game. It is very rare that the same team wins both in the same season.
