On Friday, Aug. 18, the Middle School Splash Night was moved to the Community Center due to inclement weather. The rain didn't seem to dampen the spirits of the approximate 100 attendees. They all brought their own snacks and set up in the gymnasium. DJ Steve Griffin provided a wonderful evening of music, dancing, contests and prizes. An added attraction was the dancers provided by Mr. Griffin to teach everyone the latest craze on the dance floor. Steven, Kristen, and Marcus were fantastic. The night flew by with all of the participants asking about next summer's parties as they were leaving. On Aug. 30 from noon to 2 p.m., the Big Band Association will be performing at the Shady Area adjacent to Parking Fields 6 and 6A at Eisenhower Park. A County Leisure Passport is required. At the Special Activities Building, Field 8, at Eisenhower Park on Monday - Friday (except holidays), there is billiards for seniors 60 and older from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 12:30 - 3 p.m.

Last week, the First Annual Mineola Senior Recognition Day was held at the Village Community Center. This event was co-sponsored with the Mineola Chamber of Commerce.

The 300 plus seniors who attended, enjoyed three hours of music performed by John Weber, Tom Doherty and the Long Island Harmonica Club.

The chamber obtained donations of food and raffle prizes. Its members also served as volunteers and once again, the business community extended itself on behalf of our residents and I want to thank them for their most generous assistance.

Allan S. Klapper, MD, faculty attending physician at Winthrop's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology will provide guidelines to be used in determining whether or not you should treat menopause. He will address the importance of an individualized assessment, the short and long term benefits/risks of various treatments.

This presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard. Registration is at 6:30 p.m. and this program commences at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Please call 1-888-53-WOMEN to make a reservation.

The Community Swimming Pool season is coming to a close. The weather this summer, often times has not been conducive for taking a swim.
