The challenges of caring for a homebound loved one with cancer can be daunting. Learning necessary skills, however, makes things easier for the caregiver and patient. Family members can learn these skills at a free program offered by Winthrop-University Hospital on Wednesday, September 20, 2000. It will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Hoag One Conference Room at the hospital located at 259 First Street in Mineola.
"Coping at Home" is designed to help caregivers cope more effectively and keep the patient comfortable. Topics to be covered include how to provide personal care - bed, bath and skin care - for a loved one at home. Discussion will also focus on topics such as pain control and nutrition, as well as when to contact the doctor.
The program is taught by oncology nurses from Winthrop's Division of Oncology, part of the Institute for Specialty Care. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Please call (516) 663-8843 before Sept. 13 to make a reservation.
It is that time of year - time to go to college.
Many of these students take some of the "conveniences of home" (TVs, VCRs, etc.) along with their computers to college.
You may wish to contact your insurance agent and find out if the college bound items are covered by your insurance and if so, the amount of the coverage.
While talking with your insurance agent you might want to ask since your child is going away to school if that qualifies for a reduction in your car insurance.
Finally, please make sure, if your child is covered by your medical insurance that he/she has all the information regarding who the carrier is, identification number or the like.
Your carrier claim forms are also an item that you may wish to give your college bound child.
