The "West Nile" mosquitoes primarily bite between dusk and early morning. They usually are not very active during full daylight. This is especially so during the hottest part of the summer.

However, the largest numbers of these mosquitoes appear during the warmest part of the summer. Their population starts to drop off in September into October.

When outside after dusk the wearing of long-sleeved shirts and long pants help.

The use of insect repellants is another option. Please read the label's directions before applying the repellant.

If the product contains DEET, it is suggested that you use products with less than 25 percent DEET for adults and less than 10 percent for children.

Please do not allow children to apply DEET products themselves.

There are some that suggest not using any repellants that contain DEET. You may wish to contact your doctor before using these products.

County Executive Gulotta recently announced the creation of a new West Nile Virus Information Hotline to update the residents. The telephone number is 571-2500.

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Winthrop-University Hospital is researching a new investigational treatment for asthma. People with a one-year history of asthma, who are at least 12 years of age and who are non-smokers, in general good health, may be eligible to participate in the 14-week study. The medication and all related medical tests are provided at no cost.
