A research study on a new nasal spray medication for the treatment of osteoporosis is currently being conducted at Winthrop-University Hospital. The medication is not a type of hormone replacement therapy.

Osteoporosis is a bone thinning disease that occurs in pre- and post-menopausal women, and in some older men.

The study is open to women who are at least 45 years of age, diagnosed with osteoporosis, who have not had a menstrual period in at least one year. Candidates may not be taking estrogen or any osteoporosis medication.

Participants receive medication, at no cost, plus bone density testing, and physical examinations, including laboratory tests and EKGs. Involvement in the study will help gain approval for the introduction of a potentially effective treatment for osteoporosis, which will help many people with this condition.

Interested women may call 663-2772 for more information.
