The summer intramural travel season for MAA baseball began with a successful start on the evening of July 14 under the lights at Willis Stadium on the home fields of the Mineola Athletic Association. The Minors squad, led by manager Steve Siwinski, dueled a determined team from neighboring Williston Park in a hard fought victory. The boys followed up their win with two difficult contests against Malverne and East Williston during the week of July 18.
Mineola initiated the scoring against Williston Park with a first inning tally by Matt Siwinski after advancing on infield chances by Carmine Sarno and Matt Dadich. Starting pitcher Terry Mooney shot down the opposition during the first two innings of no-hit ball dominated by five strikeouts. After Williston Park took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, Mineola's bats sparkled. Loading the bases on two walks and a hit batsman in the fourth inning, Joe Spollen singled in a pair for the 3-2 lead. A run scoring single by TJ Winters and two more hit batters loaded the bases for Dadich to garner his second RBI on a walk. Mooney then cleared the sacks with a deep double to center and scored on an RBI single by Andrew Shear. When the damage was complete, Mineola had driven in eight runs on four hits for a 9-2 cushion. Robert Sallie was the beneficiary of the offensive surge during his two innings of work hurling two strikeouts and surrendering only one earned run. The traditional game ball was presented to Terry Mooney after his brilliant displays both at the plate and on the mound.
The second game on the schedule brought Mineola to Malverne's Harris Field with an undermanned squad. Malverne took a 1-0 advantage in the second stanza courtesy of a hit batter, two stolen bases and a two out single up the middle, spoiling a two inning, five strikeout performance by Terry Mooney.
Mooney would redeem himself in the top of the third with a two out triple to deep leftfield which easily scored Alex Eisen, who led off with a four pitch walk and two stolen bases. The roof caved in on the locals in the bottom half as Malverne loaded the bases and scored four times on successive singles. Robert Sallie was summoned from the bullpen to stunt the rally while the bases remained loaded with only an out in a dim situation for the MAA. Sallie then produced two ground outs on the only two pitches he threw to earn the game ball as the outstanding feat of the night to keep Mineola alive. Unfortunately, on this night, Mineola was undone by superior pitching. During the middle innings, Malverne tossed seven consecutive strikeouts and a total of 11 in a span of 14 hitters. Mineola managed two runs before sunset in the sixth inning behind RBI singles by Mooney and Andrew Shear. The effort was not enough to avoid a 13-2 loss. Despite the lopsided outcome, Mineola was able to build on its future. The team experimented with positioning and found the first pitching outing of Vincent Ruggiero's career to be successful with two strikeouts and a walk in very efficient inning of work before a cadre of Mineola fans in attendance.
Mineola's third game began as a pitchers' duel against arch rival Garden City. Mooney started and produced three innings of tremendous work including seven strikeouts and allowing only a single earned run. Defense was the critical element of this game as shortstop John Sullivan made a heads up play in the first inning instigating a run down situation that kept the game knotted. He would later deposit the game ball into his collection. Mineola was frustrated early leaving the bases loaded three times in the first four frames and coming away empty handed. Meanwhile, Garden City aggressively advanced four players across home plate as their lineup batted around in the fourth inning to break open a close game. Mineola prevented the shutout as Fred Usma produced the game's only hit and RBI in the final at bat en route to a 7-1 defeat.
The season continues with home games each Friday through August 11, at the Willis Avenue complex. Road games are played each Tuesday, including August 1 and 15 in Garden City and August 8 in Malverne. The final three road games include an August 18 encounter in East Williston, August 22 against Garden City and the final game of the season on August 25 in Echo Park. All home games begin at 7 p.m. and road games at 6 p.m. The team would welcome support.
