The Mineola Roughriders of the Mineola Athletic Association placed first in the Commack Memorial Day Weekend Tournament with a perfect 5-0 record. Their first opponent was the Smithtown North Stars and Mineola prevailed in a 4-3 win. The scoring was done by Michael Marques (2 goals), Allan Silit and Anthony Morais. Goalkeeper Chris Orlando came up with a couple of key saves toward the end of the game to seal the win for the Roughriders.
In the second game, Mineola played the Dix Hills Devils. They proved to be the Roughriders' toughest opponents. In a game that was close right from the start, the Roughriders were able to come away with the win when Danny Vojvodic scored the winning goal from a cross from Marques with less than a minute to play giving Mineola a 3-2 win. Again Marques and Silit scored. Strong defensive play by Danny Lepe, Nicki Santos, Raoni Mello, and Terry Mooney kept Dix Hills at bay.
In the third game, the Roughriders played the Sachem Mohawks. The goalkeeping by Orlando was stellar, holding Sachem to just one goal. Again strong defense was played by Lepe, Santos and Mello in preventing Sachem from any real threats. The goals were scored by Marques (2 goals) and Pedro Barbosa in which the Roughriders came out ahead 3-1.
Their next opponent was the South Huntington Firebirds. Mineola was triumphant, winning 4-0 to clinch the championship. Exceptional play by the whole team made this contest a lopsided victory. Orlando was again sharp in goal for the shutout with Shawn Wachter going in the net as relief. The scoring was done by Marques (2 goals), Silit and Wachter. The defense, led by Lepe, Santos, Mello and Monney was very tight as South Huntington never really mounted any pressure. Anthony Morais controlled the center midfield with his hustle along with Richard Tinganilla, Pedro Barbosa, Terry Mooney and Danny Vojvodic.
The last opponent was the Northport/Cow Harbor Scorpions. In this game, the Roughriders came up flat for the first 40 minutes. With the Scorpions leading 1-0 at the half, Mineola was still flat going into the second half. Finally with 10 minutes to go in the game, Marques put the equalizer past the Scorpions goalkeeper off a feed from Wachter. In the next two minutes, the Roughriders scored two more goals (Marques and Vojvodic) to seal the 3-1 win. Overall, Michael Marques was the MVP for the tournament with the nine goals he scored in five games. Coach Marianne Wachter commented on the fact that she was very proud of the way her team played and acted with sportsmanship in the tournament.
