We have grown up with the idea that all of our monies on deposit in a bank are fully insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC).

It is true that not one dollar of FDIC protected money has ever been lost by a depositor.

However, banking has changed in recent years. Some banks "sell" shares in mutual funds and many have affiliated entities that allow you to buy and sell stocks.

FDIC insurance protects only deposits. Products such as mutual funds, annuities, stocks, bonds, life insurance, and U.S. Treasury securities are not deposits and are not protected by the FDIC. These so called "non deposit" investments are subject to investment risks including the possible loss of principal, even if you bought them in your bank.

You should note that US Treasury securities are backed by the full faith and credit of the US government.

Some are under the belief that if they open accounts at different branches they can get additional FDIC insurance. This is incorrect. An insured institution's main office and all of its branches are considered to be one institution.

If you have questions about the parameters of what the FDIC insures and what it doesn't, please call the FDIC at 1-800-934-3342 for the regional office near you.
