Barron Body Works 9, Tsontos Furs 4
Maloney's Blast Sparks Barron's
On Wednesday, May 24, Barron Body Works put forth a team effort defeating Tsontos Furs 9-4 to maintain a share of first place in the Majors Division.
Barron's (7-2) got on the board quickly in the first, as Tiago Rodrigues led off with a double, reaching base for the sixth consecutive game from the leadoff slot. As the leadoff hitter this year, Rodrigues has reached base and scored in eight of Barron's nine games. The next batter up, Robert Maloney, would provide a dazzling display of power as he drove a 2-1 pitch high and deep, well over the centerfield fence for a two-run homerun. Maloney had an exceptional day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a homerun, double and 4 RBI.
Barron's would put the game out of reach in the third as they sent 10 men to the plate. Once again, Rodrigues would lead off the inning and reach base with a single. Maloney would drive Rodrigues home again with a double. Nelson Lopes walked and Mick Oswald singled to put runners at the corners. Justin Gonzalez would sacrifice the runners and picked up an RBI as Lopes scored. Sal Cuomo singled to left to drive in Oswald. Marc Dadich singled to right putting runners on the corners again. Joe Bittner doubled them home with a booming double to the gap in left center. Allen Silit would drive home Barron's final run of the inning with a sharply hit single up the middle.
Tsontos Furs threatened in the 4th as Barron's defense became shaky. The Furs would push three runs across in the inning before Barron's settled down.
Once again, Barron's pitching was a dominant factor in the outcome. The combined efforts of Oswald (3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 6 K's), Lopes (2 IP, H, 0 ER) and Rodrigues (1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K's) shut down the poweful Furs.
Barron's Body Works 17, Harry Katz 11
Barron's Body Outlasts Katz in Slug Fest
On Wednesday, May 31, after scoring seven runs in the first inning, it looked as though Barron Body Works would cruise to an easy victory over Harry Katz. It was not that simple.
Barron's would start off this game in the same fashion that they've started most of their games this year¬with a bang. Tiago Rodrigues would provide a little extra humph this time around as he pounded a 1-1 pitch over the left centerfield fence to start the adventure. Robert Maloney followed with a single to left and Nelson Lope's double to left put runners on second and third. Mick Oswald followed with a sharply hit single to right, which sent Maloney home. Marc Dadich drilled a double to center pushing across Lopes and Oswald. Justin Gonzalez singled moving Dadich to third and Joe Bittner doubled sending Dadich home and Gonzalez to third. Next up, Allen Silit doubled in Gonzalez with Dadich holding at third on the throw home. David Esselborn walked and Rodrigues was at the plate again. Rodrigues singled, scoring Silit and Esselborn was cut down at third on an aggressive play where he just missed getting under the tag.
Barron's would score three more in the second and six more in the third seemingly putting the game out of reach as Sal Cuomo knocked across runs in both with booming line drive singles. However, Harry Katz tenaciousness and determination had them storm back. After scoring four in the second on consecutive singles from Kurt Hetzer, George Costa, Joe Monez, Ryan Fong, Chris Lopes and walks to Carl Annunziata and Matt Harrison, Katz was on their way back. In the third, Katz scored six more runs after walks to Ed Procter and Kurt Hetzer followed by hits from Costa, Monez, Chris Lopes and a walk to Chris Granth. Joe Martone and Annunziata were hit by consecutive pitches pushing the final two runs across the plate in the inning.
That was all for Maloney as Mick Oswald would come in relief to get the final out in the third. He also pitched a flawless fourth. Sal Cuomo, making his pitching debut in the fifth, got out of a jam with help from his infield and Rodrgues closed out the sixth for Barron's.
Barron's team set season highs for hits (20) and runs (17). Barron's also remains in first with a record of 8-2.
Nassau Chromium 4, Install-A-Lock 3
Nassau Chromium tumbled past Install-A-Lock 4-3 in a rain interrupted game. Chromium plated the first run of the game when Michael Granath singled, nabbed a pair of bases and came home on Paul Easton's sacrifice. Chromium added two more when David Easton reached on a walk and came in easily on Chris Brostek's homer. Chromie pitcher Joe Spollen had Lock's combination, striking out nine batters over his three scoreless innings. The Locks picked a run in the fifth when Andrew Shear doubled in Michael Brady, but the Chrome Gang answered right back when Paul Easton singled sharply to left, scoring Joe Spollen. In the top of the sixth, the Locks added two more runs on singles by John Sullivan, Matt Siwinski and Andrew Shear. But Chromium pitching locked out the last Installer on strikes. Other highlights of the game included Installer's Michael Lacava pitching. He whiffed five batters while walking none. T.J. Winters provided solid catching behind the plate and coach Tom "Innadedda" Winters grabbed a smoking foul ball.
Raynor Garage Door vs. Century 21 Laffey
On a hot June Saturday with no rain, Century 21 Laffey's bats were as hot as the day. Robby Clarkin, Zachary Englis, Matthew Stephens and Danny Hastings each had three hits.
The hitting seems to be ahead of the fielding at this point in the season. Still, the boys showed signs of knowing what to do with the ball when it's hit to them.
Mineola Animal Care vs. Century 21 Laffey
We are back to playing in the cold and rainy 2000 baseball season. Century 21's bats were still hot from the weekend as Zachary Englis, Robbie Clarkin and Danny Hastings each had hits that made it to short centerfield.
In the field, Danny Hasting and Matthew Stephens made a good play, pitcher to first base. Hitting well for Mineola Animal Care was David Pape, Charlie Attard and Chance Harrison.
