Met a most delightful lady, Margaret Gallagher of Raff Avenue. Although Margaret has lived in Mineola for 50 years, you can still hear a trace of the Irish brogue she brought with her from her native Donegal. Margaret always looks so good because she has her hair done weekly at Janbel's on Westbury Avenue.

Jack Maia of Mineola, owner of Lisbon at Night on Jericho Turnpike, tells us that he and his wife, Candy, may turn their restaurant into a night club similar to Chuckles, which formerly occupied that location. Jack and Candy own the building.

Although Al Northup is 80 years old, he still runs his own business "Golf Distributors". Al, who lives on Willis Avenue, used to have a sporting goods store on Hillside Avenue called "Northup Sports". We ran into Al a couple of times at Saratoga, as he continues to pursue his lifelong enjoyment of following the ponies. Personally, we subscribe to the old joke that the only way to make money on the horses is to follow behind them with a shovel.

The Mineola Fair has been rescheduled for July 8. After some nine years of good weather the law of averages caught up with us when the event was washed out in May. July 8 has to be a bright sunny day.

It certainly was good to see Father Ken Winkler back at the helm at Corpus Christi Church following his recent illness.

Jim and Donna Doran of Sheridan Boulevard enjoyed breakfast at the Jericho Diner on Memorial Day.

Frequently run into Ron Geoffrion of Washington Avenue. His dad, of the same name, was a great hockey player for the Montreal Canadiens.

Mary Katzer, formerly of Harrison Avenue, was in town. Mary now lives out east. Her dad, Bill Katzer, was very active in village affairs.

Bill Asher, the son of Mineola's first mayor who was elected in 1925, lives on the North Shore. Bill is 82 years old and recently lost his wife Rita. He still comes to the village to get his hair cut at Pete's, which is next door to the old Asher Pharmacy.

Mary and Hugh McElhone of Bauer Place are doing well in spite of Hugh's illness. Hugh used to be with the Mineola School system. Mary tells us that her mother, Ellen Maye, is still enjoying good health at the age of 101.

Nassau Democratic leader Tom DiNapoli had coffee at the Jericho Diner. We had a chance to talk to him, as we have known him since he was elected to the Mineola School Board when he was just 18 years old. Now he is an assemblyman as well as county leader of the Dems.

Contractor Jim Agnew of Garfield Avenue was working on a job when a huge hunk of plaster fell from the ceiling and sliced across his hand. Jim had his hand in a cast for five weeks.

Two fellows we meet most mornings buying their newspapers at TK's Gifts are Bob Kershaw of Raff Avenue and Manny Losquadro of Hy-Tone Fuel on Columbus Parkway.

Lou Gagliano of Beebe Road jogs almost every day carrying weights no less.

* * * *

Geese have returned to Memorial Park. They are handsome birds but, unfortunately, make walking hazardous.

Some 125 families and friends attended a recent Mass at Corpus Christi to greet newly-ordained Deacon BrianMannix. His wife, Sue, father Joe, mother Catherine and sisters Kathleen and Denise are very proud of him. Among many friends attending were Helen and John Wengler, Roswitha Kick, Pat and Bernadette O'Brien, Joe and Arline Cavanaugh, Tom and Dan Flynn, Marcel and Mrs. Chaillol, Mike and Faye Chiusano and Chris and Ann Gannon. Eight priests concelebrated the Mass, along with Deacon John Reinhart. Former music director Susan Hugelmeyer returned for the occasion. Hundreds of people attended the reception after the Mass.

Those snowbirds Gertrude and Nick Passarella of Emory Road are back in town after spending six months in Florida They also had a chance to see their great-grandson Hunter.

Williston Park looked great with Old Glory flying from every other telephone pole in honor of Flag Day.
