Kerry and Geoff Tice of Wellington Road are the parents of Mary Elizabeth who was born on March 29 at Winthrop Hospital. She is their first child. Mary is named after her maternal grandmother Mary O'Neill of Mineola and her paternal grandmother Elizabeth of Albany.

Among a few people who stopped at our table at the Mineola Fair before the rains hit were Luann Scribani, Raphaela and Neil Piloto, Donna Strein and Linda Doell. After nine years of great weather our luck ran out that rainy weekend. The fair may be held later in the summer.

It was great to see Corpus Christi priest Father Tomaz Gomide and attorney Jack Martins being interviewed on NBC in front of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima in the church. This was during the Pope's visit to Portugal and the revelation of the third mystery.

Speaking of Corpus Christi, Father Tom Murphy observed the 30th anniversary of his ordination May 30.

Former Chamber of Commerce president Peter Gollobin is some man. He is a great skier, in fact an instructor, a great fisherman and a superb horseman. He has won a host of ribbons in horse shows for his jumping and he rides in the Smithtown Hunt with the hounds in the pursuit of the elusive fox. When he was in Ireland he rode the Rings of Kerry. What a guy!

Al Ratto of Garfield Avenue, former assistant principal of Mineola High, can be seen most mornings on his fast walking tours of the village.

Dan and his son Tom Flynn of Kenilworth Road presented the gifts at a recent Sunday Mass in memory of the deceased members of PF 62. This refers to a naval engagement during the Korean War in which Dan miraculously survived.

We were sorry to hear that Lenny Kazdan of Colonial Avenue is ill. His wife Ruth was an ace reporter for this newspaper for 25 years.

Joe DiGiorgio of Jerome Avenue is also ailing. Joe and his wife Louise and Bill Morgan were the founders of the Mineola Ambulance Corps.

That man with the bushy hair and long black beard is John Rainone of Watkins Drive. John has worked for the village for 20 years.

The sign over the former Ashers Pharmacy has been taken down. This ends that last vestage of the Asher family's association with the village. Harry Asher was the first mayor of Mineola elected in 1925. His sons Bill and Harry owned the drug store and also were the proprietors of the liquor store across Jericho Turnpike called Asher's Liquors.

We will miss John Cooke of McKinley Parkway who died recently. John and his son Tom bought the building which formerly housed the Mineola American and converted it into TK's Gifts. John's wife Dolores also served with me on the pool board.

Berta Gauto and her husband Elenterio live on Washington Avenue. Berta is the owner of the beauty salon on Westbury Avenue.

Lou Santosus, the deputy mayor, and Bob Lippman had coffee at the Jericho.

That bruised and battered face of Alice Grom of Arlington Street is the result of a headlong fall. She says, "I had a fight with my neighbor's foundation and came out on the losing side." If you know Alice, you will not be surprised to hear she lost no time at work.

Pat and Joe Rudolph have moved to Roslyn Road from Richmond Hill where they were both born - Joe, 75 years ago and Pat, 69 years ago. Their son is New York City policeman Tom Rudolph of Marcellus Road. Tom's wife Dorothy is a nurse. Welcome to the village.

Our granddaughter Kim Sanders, age 12, was very excited when Met catcher Todd Pratt threw her the ball before a recent game. She will keep that ball forever, I'm sure.
