Mineola Florist opened up their season with an 8-2 win over Nassau Chromium. Nassau was ahead 1-0 until the botttom of the fourth inning when Mineola Florist batted around. Fred Usma led off by singling to left. Mike Anes walked and Dom Campagna singled to load the bases. Daniel Fitzgerald came up and tripled to bring home three runs, giving Florist a 3-1 lead. Andrew Leno and Gabriel Couto walked to load the bases again. Matthew Dadich singled home two more runs. Daniel Fitzgerald, who had two triples, also combined with Couto and Dadich to strikeout a total of 14 batters. Defensively, John Englis made a good play up the middle to get the runner out at first.
Tsontos Furs defeated Barron Body Works 11-3 on April 24.
Both teams entered the game with a 1-0 record. Even though it was early in the season, the game would prove to be exciting one. Tiago Rodrigues (Barron Body) led the game off with a base hit and quickly stole second. Steve Keeler (Tsontos Furs) retired Barron with two strikeouts, getting the third out with a pop up my Mark Dadich. First up at bat for Tsontos Furs, Brian Abrams, hit a home run over the left field fence. Robert McPartland and Steve Keeler each singled and stole a base. Mike Donato doubled making it 3-0. In the top of the third inning, TJ Gessner (called up from the Minors for Barron) walked, stole second as well as third and scored on Rob Maloney's single, making it 3-1. Joe Werther began the fourth inning with a double and scored, followed by walks by Brian Green and Kevin Brostek. Not to be outdone, Robert McPartlan hit a three-run homerun over the left field fence making it 7-1. With only one out, Steve Keeler tripled and Pete Diglio singled. On a walk by Craig Strein, John Rovegno pulled off a major league bunt allowing Pete to come home. Brian Green singled letting Craig and John score. Tsontos Furs went ahead 11-1. In the top of the sixth inning, Barron Body was not done. Mark Dadich hit a triple. Justin Gonzales singled and TJ Gessner doubled allowing Justin to score, making the final score 11-3. For Tsontos Furs, pitchers Steve Keeler and Brian Abrams combined for 13 strikeouts.
Chamber of Commerce defeats Tsontos Furs 9-3 on April 26.
On a misty, cold Wednesday night, the Chamber of Commerce beat the first place Tsontos Furs 9-3. The Commerce team (1-0) played well in all aspects of the game. The pitchers Brian Gonzalez and starter Chris Harnett struck out 11 Furs batters. Luke Ammirati threw out one runner stealing and joined with Peter Dwyer (Commerce's second baseman) tagging out two runners at the plate. Luke also hit the ball hard with two doubles, his second knocked in three runs. Max Bankin chipped in with his timely hitting with a base hit in the first after a walk in the fifth. The Commerce team also was able to take advantage of 11 walks, with five of them scoring. There were some bright spots for the Furs (2-1). In the third inning, with the score close at 4-2 and a runner on third, Chris Harnett hit a towering fly ball to right that Kevin Brostek was able to reach up and make the inning ending catch. In the fourth inning, Craig Strein was able to retire the side with the bases loaded and no outs. The Furs did get their third double digit hit total with 10, but were unable to get the timely hitting, leaving a disappointing 11 runners on base. The Furs top three hitters did their job again with Brian Abrams going 1 for 3 with a run scored. Robert McPartland went 2 for 3 with a run scored and Steve Keeler went 3 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs. After scoring 25 runs and getting 28 hits in their first two games, the Furs are hoping to forget about the loss.
