Tip O'Neill is credited with the adage, "all politics is local." Most governmental decisions that directly impact people's everyday lives are made downtown, not on Capitol Hill. Sadly, most Americans don't bother to vote unless it is a presidential election year, and even then the average turnout is about 40 percent. Within the next few months, the residents of Mineola and the Mineola School District will have the opportunity to show their collective electoral mettle in helping decide important local matters.

Village Trustees and Village Party members Warren Brinker and Maryanne Warnecke are up for re-election and are facing Hometown Party candidate Linda Fairgrieve in a contest on March 21. The two with the most votes will sit on the board that will continue to grapple with such issues as traffic congestion, illegal housing, costly bond projects and downtown revitalization. Pay attention to the issues, attend board meetings and ask questions. In fact, make requests. Remember that village officials are there to represent and respond to the residents. If, for example, you think the current system of time limits for speakers at board meetings is unreasonable, say so and why. You would be surprised how many of your fellow residents are thinking the same thing you are.

Critical times are ahead for the school district as well, with the assurance by the Board of Education that another bond proposal will be put before voters this year. The Mineola School District, like most others, is struggling with space problems and needs to address this and other concerns ¬ like keeping up with technology needs ¬ in the bond issue. Voters shot down a proposed $38 million bond issue last year. In its wisdom, the current board is sending out surveys to residents to better align itself with what people are willing to spend and on what. Surely there will be no more economically impacting decision local residents will make this year than on the bond issue. Fill out the survey and return it in a timely fashion. That's a good first step in making sure the board puts out a borrowing plan that voters can embrace, ensuring the students the best possible facilities at the best price. Attend meetings, workshops, and make your particular concerns known by writing letters to the board.

As always, any requests, inquiries or suggestions are welcome by the Mineola American. Help us serve your interests better by making them known.
