The 4th Annual Pasta Dinner sponsored by the Mineola Junior Fire Department will be held on Sunday, February 6, 2000 at the Mineola Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue from noon to 4:30 p.m.

Tickets for the great event are available in advance, (please contact Gary Mazur or Rob Connolly at 747-5860) or at the door.

The cost is: adults $8, seniors and children under 10 $5.

There will be a Chinese Auction, 50-50 Raffle and plenty of gifts and prizes for the children.

The parenting of teenagers can be challenging. Issues of dating, curfews, peer pressure, drugs and alcohol are examples of topics parents and teens will confront during the "adolescent years."

In an effort to assist parents, Winthrop-University Hospital is presenting a free seminar, "Surviving Adolescence," on Wednesday, January 26th. It will be held at the Winthrop Conference Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard. Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by the program at 7 p.m.

This seminar will feature a panel presentation, followed by question and answers. Dr. Janes B. Swedler, chief of Adolescent Medicine, will discuss "Common Health Issues During Adolescence." Loren O'Dempsey, MA, RN, will discuss "Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll" and Margaret Lorenz, CSW, will discuss "Understanding Your Teenagers: Psychological and Developmental Issues."

The Chamber of Commerce recently honored three gentlemen who have given their time and talents to our community for a combined total of over two hundred years. The honorees are: Lou Sanders, Jack Baker and Jerry Mehlman. To each, I wish to congratulate them on a "job well done."

Winthrop-University Hospital outreach program makes available speakers to community groups, business organizations, senior clubs and organization.

This program covers a wide variety of topics that range from parenting to health in the "golden years."

As part of Winthrop's commitment to health education, the speakers are available free-of-charge.

Those who have been selected by the Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps as the Top Responders for 1999 are Mark Swensen, Brian Clements, Mary Mahoney, Chris DeVito and Joseph Nadoly.

I congratulate each of them for their efforts in attending to the medical needs of our community.

Seniors and their families can learn about the latest advance at Winthrop-University Hospital's free Health Update for Seniors lecture, "Diabetes: Sweet Success with New Medications" on Wednesday, Feb. 9. This program will be held at the Mineola Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue. Registration will begin at 1:15 p.m., followed by the lecture at 1:45 p.m.

Admission is free, but seating is limited. You are encouraged to call 663-3916 to make a reservation.
