I and my wife Eleanor, extend to all, our best wishes for a joyous holiday.

Our village is well served by its employees. Three of its employees, Dolores McGahan, Vilma Doherty and Pierre Marchais have retired.

I want to thank each of them for the years of dedicated service to our residents and I wish each of them well in their retirement.

We have read and heard the term Y2K for the past year. The question that many of us have is, what is Y2K?

In the formative days of computers, programmers used a 2 digit field for the year in order to conserve space. When the Year 2000 arrives, the date field will indicate "00" for the year and as a result, some computers may fail or not function appropriately.

I am pleased to advise you that all of the village's computer systems are Y2K compliant and there will be no interruption of service to our residents.

Should you have concerns regarding whether other entities are Y2K compliant, you may wish to consider one or more of the following:

1) Refill your prescriptions prior to Dec. 31. This will permit you to have an adequate supply of medications.

2) In the event that your power fails (which is extremely unlikely), please make sure that you have a battery-operated radio. This will permit you to get information when the power will be restored.

DO NOT use portable non-vented devices, such as barbecue grills, inside your home nor kerosene heaters.

3) Please make sure that your flashlights are operational and it would be prudent to have extra batteries. With the advancement of technology one item - i.e.; a hand can opener - has for many, disappeared from the items in our kitchens. If power is interrupted, you will need one.

We are on the eve of the beginning of a New Millennium. I invite our residents, houses of worship and organizations to supply items to be included in the millennium time capsule. Please support our local businesses. They support many community activities and by shopping locally we will be saying "thank you."
