In two previous wins before Sunday's Police Athletic League football game against Garden City, Mineola's defense had yet to yield a point.
That trend continued as the 9-year-old Chiefs (3-4) won their first road game of the year, shutting out the Thunder 19-0.
The Chiefs' defense started off strong, holding Garden City on their first possession and continued the rest of the game with a defensive intensity that had been lacking in all four of the Chief's losses this season, including two straight leading up to this game.
The strong play of the defense, led by Keenan Carter and Shamar Stephen, paved the way for a solid offensive effort and spectacular individual performance by Kevin Wilkins.
Wilkins started his day off by running for 27 yards on his first play from scrimmage and never cooled off, capping the Chiefs' first drive with a 23-yard touchdown run early in the first. Wilkins scored the point, giving Mineola a 7-0 lead.
Wilkins set up the Chiefs' other first-half score by running 20 yards to the Thunder 1-yard line before quarterback Trever Landry widened the lead to 13-0 with his sneak.
With the score still 13-0 in the fourth quarter, Wilkins finished his day off with a 60-yard scoring jaunt, providing the finishing touches on the Chiefs' performance.
Mineola's last game will be at home on Sunday against Uniondale.
