The Mineola High School football squad embarassed a Plainedge team Saturday. But despite a 40-6 loss, Plainedge became the first team to score a touchdown against the red hot Mustangs in three games.
The win put the Mustang's record at 5-2 and moved them into second place in the Conference III standings and within striking distance of Mineola's first playoff appearance since 1989.
Mineola's offense had 400 yards, led by James McQueen's 143 yards on 17 carries and Chris Jones' 142 yards on 15 carries. Jones scored two touchdowns. Touchdowns were also scored by Matt Antoniou (1 yard), James McQueen (14 yards), Gary Jimenez (4 yards) and John Batson on a 12-yard throw from Vishal Gandhi.
The Mustang's defense also had a banner day, with Eugene Dolan returning an interception for 20 yards. Dolan also recovered a fumble and contributed five tackles. Jon Batson led Mineola with eight tackles.
Plainedge (4-3) scored its only touchdown in the second quarter, the first given up by the Mustang defense in three games.
The Mustangs will take on Wantagh (2-4) at the Hampton Street Stadium at 2 p.m. on Saturday. A win puts them in the playoffs.
