More Monies for Mineola from Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell

Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell, in her continuing efforts to assist our residents, recently advised me that she has been successful in obtaining more money for Mineola.

She was able to obtain monies for two more Mineola organizations: Mineola Athletic Association and the Mineola Fire Department.

She told me that "Among the most satisfying aspects of being a public servant is providing my constituents with funding to improve the standards of living in our communities."

Recently, after a hiatius of 22 years, the Mineola High School football team played Garden City's team at their field.

Mineola was victorious and thanks to their efforts on the field, I won my "wager" with the mayor of Garden City.

The 8-year-old division of the Nassau County Youth Football League (NCYFL) i.e., the Mineola Chiefs, recently played the Garden City Thunders. The Chiefs prevailed - the score was 20 to 0.

Congratulations to all the players, the coaches and their parents on a "job well done."

The V.F.W. publishes a newsletter and in its recent edition there was an article "About the American Flag." I believe that this article is important and as such, I thought it was appropriate to include it in my column.

Old Glory, the Stars and Stripes or The Star Spangled Banner has been the symbol of the Country since the beginning of this country's history. Our National Anthem is about our Flag. We have a Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag that its citizens and soldiers recite and pledge to defend; the American Flag drapes the coffins of those who served our country.

Yet today, the very same Flag can be burned and desecrated as a form of protest. This act is offensive to those who served this country and its flag. It's offensive to those who gave their lives for the freedoms of this country and the flag for which those freedoms stand.

Eighty-two percent of Americans polled believe that the American Flag should not be burned or desecrated, but rather protected by the law.

I urge all citizens to contact their political representatives and let them know that you support the Flag Amendment to protect the American Flag. Fly your flag and show your support for it.

The chamber's nominating committee recently announced that their selection for the 1999 Nassau Council of the Chambers of Commerce "Business Person of the Year" is the Chamber's 2nd Vice-President, John Broder, of Winthrop-University Hospital.
