At its monthly meeting, the East Williston Village Board discussed several changes it was proposing for its current zoning code.

Included in the changes would be limiting the locations of pools on village lots, requiring the submission of updated surveys prior to issuing a certificate of occupancy, requiring the submission of security to the village to ensure the protection of village property during certain types of construction, and regulating the permitted location of portable toilets on constructions sites.

A public hearing will be held on Oct.12 at 8 p.m. for anyone wishing to comment on the changes.

The board also passed a resolution to increase the number of days full-time village employees can take off for illness from 10 to 15.

"The purpose of us adopting this resolution," Village Trustee David P. Tanner said, is because "our disability programs for our employees don't kick in until they've been out of work for 15 days." Tanner expressed his concerns about the health of employees, citing that having to work outside and being more prone to injuries "than the average office worker" warrants more days being taken off for illness. He also said that the village would save money, since allowing more time for recovery would mean less sick time being taken off during the rest of the year.

During the public session, two citizens spoke out about tax exemptions and building codes.

Frank Wibben was not clear about the filing dates for various exemptions on village taxes, especially those for seniors and veterans.

"I suggest the village specify when and how senior citizens apply to the village for exemptions," he said, citing the fact that the village has not published the necessary dates in its newsletter or the local publications.

The board responded by saying that they are preparing a pamphlet that will explain "how all procedures are handled," Treasurer Richard Camp said. "Our tax bill will make reference to contacting the village office. It will be all-encompassing." He added that the pamphlets will include all the necessary filing dates, and will be available at the village office "in time for next year's taxes."

Another resident, Gloria Paine, expressed her interest in adding a resolution to the village's building codes having to do with fences. "There are a lot of fences going up in this village," she said. "And personally, the placement of some of them are very evil in my eye, especially ones located in front of houses."

Mayor Nancy Zolezzi said the village will look into it, and may "suggest the zoning be changed."

Upcoming events in the village include flu shots being available for seniors starting Oct. 8 at the American Legion, and the arrival of the Mammovan on Nov. 19.
