At it's bi-weekly meeting, the Mineola Village Board honored one of its youngsters' sports teams. The Mineola Little League won the District 29 championship on July 22 after going 24-1 during the season. It is the second time in three years the team has won.

"We had a really good team this year," Manager Ken Weiss said. "They were very easy to coach."

At the meeting, Mayor John Colbert handed each player, and coach Art Egner, a special signed certificate expressing the appreciation of the village toward the childrens' achievements. Weiss was unable to attend the ceremony.

At the work session held before the public session, the board approved the hiring of Richard Ippolito, Joseph Vivinetti, Gary Connors Peter Vanderbeck and Robert Neubauer as the construction managers for the library project. Their responsibility is to "stay on top of the contractors and make sure the flow of paperwork and construction in smooth," according to Ippolito. The team will also act as a liaison between the architect's office and the contractor. He explained that at least one member of the team will be on-site at all times, and the group will report back to the village board on a bi-weekly basis. If a problem arises, they will report weekly "if needed." They expect the construction to begin in two and a half weeks.

At the public meeting, Village Trustee Warren Brinker expressed the importance of residents obtaining a village leisure pass. He also said that a new computer program will allow the village to produce an "integrated pass," incorporating the leisure pass and the library card. The cards will not be created until next year. He said that residents would still be able to get a separate library card at no cost.

The board also announced several upcoming events in the village, including the free showing of the entire Star Wars Trilogy at the village community center on Oct. 9, starting at 2 p.m. and a family skate night at Williston Park on Sept. 24 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Attendees must have a 1999 leisure pass to attend. Also, the flu and pneumonia shot will be offered at the community center starting on Oct. 20. Forms can be picked up and appointments can be made after Oct. 1.

Also at the public meeting, several local residents stated their concerns about the lack of developments in meetings between the village and the LIRR about the Herricks depression and other crossings. Mayor Colbert countered by saying that the the meetings are taking place, but no solid ideas have been developed.

"Nothing has been formed," he said. "Nothing is in concrete at this point. For us to come out with a statement is premature. (When) we get something concrete, then we will make things known. And we will definitely have meetings with the public."

The board used the work session to discuss an application from Metricom to install radios on several light poles in the village. The radios will be used to quicken internet access and allow village agencies to receive necessary data faster. The board decided to table the application, due to expressed concerns about residents' health being affected by possible electromagnetic radiation. The company currently has the radios installed in several major cities and towns, mostly along the west coast.
