On Saturday, Aug. 7, the Village of Mineola hosted its first 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. The event had over 20 participants of all ages. The special "Junior Championship Match" pitted the Little Bombers and the Little Hoopsters. The game went back and forth with the Little Bombers coming out on top. Members of the championship team were Tim Palma, James Kelly, Gregory Carlin and Danny Stagnari, who hit the game winning shot. The runners-up were Jackie Stagnari, Shawn Stagnari, Kevin Carlin, Mick Oswald and Tom Oswald.
The competition heated up between the Staff Superstars and Run and Gun in their best three out of five series. The competition was fierce, with Run and Gun prevailing in three straight games. Members of the championship team were Richard Arroyo, Manuel Fernandes and Timothy McGinnis. The runners-up were Scott Aloy, John Weaver and Mario Ciccone. After the championship series, a special "King of the Court" challenge match was held between the champs and the Bomb Squad, consisting of Tom Oswald Sr., Chris Teemsma and Tom Oswald. In the end, it was a hard fought battle with the Bomb Squad coming out on top 16-14.
The final game of the afternoon was a "Battle of the Sexes" between the Lovely Ladies, which included Sue Ellen Farrel, Mary Madine and Louise McCucker, and the Macho Men, which included Tom Oswald, Mick Oswald and Steven Ferreira. The game went back and forth between the two teams, with the Lovely Ladies finally prevailing 15-13.
Winners were treated to food and drinks from the Wilson Park Refreshment Stand. The Village would like to thank Marianne and Fred Wachter for their assistance, and would like to congratulate all the participants. They also look forward to seeing everyone at the next basketball tournament to be held at the Community Center this winter.
