A young woman raced into a local supermarket, glanced up and down the aisles and asked a manager where she could get more hamburger buns, because there were none left on the shelves.

The manager said he had them in the back and asked her how many she needed. She replied, "400."

The last minute shopping of Kiwanis member, Cecelia Bastos, took place last Friday afternoon only moments before the children of the Mineola Recreation Program lined up at Wilson Park for a free barbecue, courtesy of the County Seat Kiwanis.

Kiwanians and Co-Chairs, Tony Bellissimo and John DaVanzo, actually instituted Youth Day when they were on the Village Board some years ago, and resurrected the program in conjunction with the village's recreation program run by Director Christine Wiedman.

To supplement the staff of servers, employees of the the Village Pool and Village Hall, as well as village trustees, handed out the goodies to the children who had just finished a day of competition in several sports.

Mayor John P. Colbert and Trustees Maryanne Warnecke, Lou Santosus and Elizabeth Conlon handed out the awards to the children.
