It is a cliche, I know, but it is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my resignation after 7 1/2 years of involvement in the Mineola Athletic Association as a parent, assistant coach, head coach and executive board member.
It seems like only yesterday that Jimmy Francis convinced my son Peter to take the field for his first soccer game in the spring of 1992. Peter went on to play in 15 programs and 140 games since then. I would like to thank his coaches ¬ Francis, John Toto, Larry Kane, Fred Wachter, Laura Xanthus, Ruth Hazzard and Vito Errico ¬ for the patience and understanding they showed us through the years. I would also like to thank all of his baseball coaches, including Rick Masso, Peter Papadogiannis, George Harrison, Jim Murphy, Jerry Jetter and John Strein, for the positive vibes and excellent instruction they provided.
Too often, we take volunteer coaches for granted. Without them, there would be a tremendous void in this community. And I can say with an insider's knowledge that we have some great coaches in the MAA who make playing sports fun for the kids. After more than seven years of playing three sports, my son decided he needed a break. I understand his feelings but I will miss the great times we had in the MAA baseball and soccer programs.
The position of recording secretary is open. Candidates for the position should contact MAA President Fred Wachter or attend the Aug. 19 executive board meeting at MAA House on Willis Ave. It has been a pleasure to serve with some of the most dedicated, knowledgeable and sensitive men and women I have ever met.
