"Debbie, AV," came the response to phone calls made to the AV office, when I first started at the Mineola American.
AV stood for Audio Visual, the office at the Mineola High School where one could discuss the district's publicity with the ever-insightful, ever-witty, ever-working John Collins.
"Debbie" was Deborah Fulgieri, or to me a sweet and unforgettable friend.
Now, I could not tell you her favorite color, or her favorite song, nor could I tell you any bit of her life story. I met her in person less than a handful of times. Our relationship was based simply on our working together to publicize the accomplishments of Mineola students.
Yet, she made such an indelible impression on me through simple phone conversations, the duration of which could be measured in seconds, that I consider her a friend.
Why?
It was her demeanor. She was always in good spirits. It was her helping hands, that aided me in learning about the Mineola schools and to provide coverage to the students. It was her understanding for the job that I did, the highs and the lows. In the words of John Collins she was "effervescent," "bubbly," and always concerned for others.
Debbie was always good to me, and that I will never forget. I will always consider her a friend, one I made at work, perhaps my first.
So, to her I send my thanks, and to her husband, Philip; her daughters, Cindy and Amy; and to all her loved ones; who recently suffered her passing at the age of 51, I send my prayers and well wishes.
It was just simple phone conversation, that meant such a great deal to me, most probably more than she ever knew. Simply being herself, she made an impact on my life. I think that speaks volumes, in an unmistakable voice of a wonderful person and friend named Debbie.
