The annual St. Aidan Williston Park/Albertson Run will be held on Sunday, April 25, rain or shine. The day's races commence at 2:30 p.m. with a one block PeeWee race for the under 7 crowd, followed by a one mile race for children 12 and under and then the five kilometer race at 3 p.m. After the final race, all volunteers, runners and spectators are invited back to Msgr. Kirwin Hall for the awards ceremony and party. Registration forms are available at local stores, St. Aidan's Rectory, Williston Park Village Hall or may be obtained by calling Linda Dobranski at 378-2203 ext. 16. Registration is also available on the day of the race starting at noon in Msgr. Kirwin Hall, located at St. Aidan's lower school, Willis Ave. and Pembroke Street, Williston Park, but pre-registration entitles the first 300 pre-registered runners to a free commemorative T-shirt.
Last year's race attracted over 500 runners, volunteers and spectators and the race committee expects an even larger crowd this year. The PeeWee Run starts at the corner of Astor Place and Lafayette Street and proceeds north the length of Lafayette Street to the finish on Pembroke. All entrants will receive a finisher's ribbon. Competition in the one mile run is divided into two age groups, 9 and under and 10-12 in both the boys and girls' divisions, and the 5K will have 24 separate awards categories.
Since the race is being run through the streets, there will be road closures which may affect some residents. The course for the one mile race starts at the intersection of Lafayette Street and Astor Place, proceeds west on Lafayette to Colonial, north to Center Street, east to Park Avenue and south to the finish at Pembroke. The 5K route runs from Willis Ave. at Pembroke St. south to Lafayette Street, then west to Herricks Road, Herricks Road north to Searingtown Road Northeast to McKinley Ave. east to Miles Ave. south to William St. west to Colonial Ave. south to Center St. east to Park Ave. south to Pembroke to the finish. Homeowners on or around the race route can expect that the entire race will be over by 4 p.m.
