The Portuguese Lions Club held its usual wonderful breakfast on Palm Sunday at the club. Almost all members chipped in to help make it a great success. Anthony Diaz served as chairman. The young people of the Leo Club served as chance sellers. Among those we got to talk with were: Maria Costa; Christina DeOliveira; Maria Joao Leitao; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Minchella; Mr. and Mrs. George Sjursen; Mr. and Mrs. John Mahoney Jr.; Lisa Enderle, Timothy Mahoney, Mr. and Mrs. John Mahoney III; Meg, Jeff, Joshua and Daniel McDowell; James Koeppen; Lucille McDowell; Manuel and Maria Julia Valente; Augusta Calado; Mimi Valente; Maria Jose Santos; Sal and Ida Mammina; Ann and Charles Hlavenka; Joe and Arline Cavanaugh; Maria, Nicole and Christopher Conto; Ausenda Alexandre; Emilia, Michelle and Nelson Eusebio; Marieta Lopes; and Samantha Schoenack.

Brian Santosus, son of Village Trustee Lou and Pat Santosus, wed Terisa Curtin of Williston Park at St. Aidan's Church March 26. The newlyweds used the background of Memorial Park for their photos. The couple bought a home on Mineola Boulevard.

Remember that large property on Penn. Avenue which was used to park vehicles by Mineola Ford? Well, six private homes are planned for that property. There is a good deal of opposition from the residents of Penn. Avenue.

Bill Greene of Jerome Avenue is now a partner in the firm of Tsontos Furs.

Again, we must call the village's attention to the large number of broken meters in Mineola. It's illegal to park at a broken meter. If the meters were repaired it would provide more parking spots for local shoppers and also increase the revenue for the village. Everybody would gain.

Ida and Sal Mammina became great-grandparents in a big way when Michael Alexander Cascine was born. The big fellow weighed in at 9 lbs. 11 oz.

Ann and Ray Vaz of Mineola visited their old American Legion buddies John and Irene Tringali. The Tringalis live in Duluth, GA. John is a past legion commander and Irene used to head the auxiliary.

Former Mineola Mayor Stanley Krause of Jackson Avenue still takes his daily walk even though he is almost 90 years old. Stan, who served during the '50s and '60s, used to walk five miles a dayâ now he is down to half a mile. In his younger days Stan was a great golfer and an ardent skier.

Good running into Linda Doell the other day. Linda works at the Mineola Library. A resident of Emory Road, she used to work at Anton Newspapers.

The word cunning has greatly changed its meaning over the years. In the 16th century the word meant highly intelligent. Today, cunning means sly and deceptive.

Mary Gesslein Ottens of Burkhard Avenue says the trouble with this column is that it doesn't go back far enough. Mary was born at Nassau Hospital (now Winthrop) 78 years ago. She is a graduate of Corpus Christi School and is a charter member of the fire department auxiliary. She remembers when her first child was born and she spent 10 days at Nassau Hospital and the total bill for 10 days was $100. The doctor who delivered the baby billed her for $50.

Joe and Arline Cavanaugh of Albertson Place will celebrate 50 years of marriage with a Mass at Corpus Christi Church April 24.
