The Mineola Red Heat boys' under-13 travel soccer team finished with a 4-5 record in division 6 of the Long Island Junior Soccer League and a 7-6-1 mark overall.
The team was not in good shape early in the season and also ran into its toughest opponents early-on, going 2-4-1 in its first seven matches while scoring only five goals. But with Sean Callahan (eight goals) leading the way, the Red Heat won five of its last seven, outscoring its opponents 17-13. Coach Vito Errico and assistant Jim Smith will audition possible newcomers over the winter and hope to field a spring team which is committed to working hard and playing intelligent, tactical soccer.
Besides Callahan, the team's top players were stopper/midfielder Vito Errico, goalie Brendan Canavan, midfielder Chris Olivares (three goals), defender Ramon Valente, sweeper Peter Smith, midfielder Luis Rosa (four goals) and Danny Medlock, who played various positions.
The next group of contributors included Mike Skaliotis (one goal), Mike Bencivenga, Julio Gauto, Bobby Citro and goalie Kevin Franciotti, as well as John Reedy, Ben Molina, John Boland and Luis Bautista.
