The Mineola Red Heat boys' under -13 soccer team evened its overall record at 5-5-1 with a come-from-behind 3-2 home win over Jericho on Oct. 25. The Red Heat was 2-4 in Division 6 of the Long Island Junior Soccer League with three games left.
Sean Callahan was the star of the game for the Red Heat. The tall striker covered two-thirds of the field. He scored the game's first goal at the 28-minute mark of the first half and assisted on the other two. Jericho led it at one with less than a minute to play in the first half and went ahead 2-1 15 minutes into the second. But the Red Heat scored goals from Chris Olivares at the 19-minute mark and Luis Rosa with nine minutes left in the game.
Danny Medlock began the game-winning play by overlapping from right fullback and feeding Callahan down the right sideline. Callahan's cross was converted by Rosa. Callahan(5), Rosa (3) and Olivares (3) have accounted for 11 of the Red Heat's 15 goals. The team has allowed 20 goals.
Others who played well in the Jericho game were: Michael Skaliotis, John Boland, Vito Errico, Peter Smith, Luis Bautista, John Reedy, Michael Bencivenga, Ben Molina, Bobby Citro and Julio Gauto. Goalies Kevin Franciotti and Brendan Canavan played one half each, made several key saves and both allowed one goal.
