The Mineola Red Heat boys under-13 soccer team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Rosedale 3-2 Sept. 14 at home in its opening game in division 6 of the Long Island Junior Soccer League.
Peter Smith's goal on a 35-yard free kick with five minutes left in the first half began the comeback. Red Heat newcomer Luis Rosa scored twice in the second half. This first goal came on a rebound of newcomer Sean Callahan's shot and his second on a nifty volley of Callahan's cross.
Coach Vito Errico went to four defenders - Julio Gauto, Ramon Valente, Smith and Vito Errico - in the last 10 minutes to preserve the win. New goalie Kevin Franciotti was impressive, making several diving saves and consistently punting the ball out of trouble.
The Red Heat has 10 returnees from this spring's 0-5-4 team: Smith, Errico, Valente, Gauto, Brendan Canavan, John Boland, Dan Medlock, Ben Molina, Chris Olivares and John Reedy. Other newcomers are: Bobby Citro, Luis Bautista, Mike Bencivenga and Mike Skaliotis. The team's next home game is Sunday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. at field 2 near the village pool.
