We recently wrote about a book called Once Around the Bases. It was the story of some 50 men who played just one game in their major league careers before they were cut. Christopher Haughey was one of the players mentioned in the book and it turns out that he is the uncle of Brian Krasinski of Mineola Blvd. By the way Laura and Brian celebrated the birthdays of their daughters Sarah and Amanda last month.

Speaking of Ireland, we just finished reading Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes. His brother Malachy has written a book about Ireland too, called A Monk Swimming. He gets that title from what he thought, as a little boy, was, when saying the Hail Mary...Blessed Art Thou Amongst Women. Get it? It reminds me of the Protestant hymn The Cross I'd Bear. A little girl we knew thought they were singing about a cross-eyed bear.

Bob Seewaldt opened his Roberts Mens Shop 45 years ago. Before that he was a salesman for Foresto Mens Shop on Willis Avenue. In fact his first job in retailing was at Saul's Mens Shop on Willis Avenue near where the old Corpus Christi Church building stood. A few of you might remember Saul's which was run by Leon Saul of Mineola. In fact Leon was a classmate at Mineola High School of our good friend Grace Weismantel. Saul's also had another salesman Natt Rosenberg of Mineola who later opened his own shop called Natt's on Mineola Blvd. Natt and his wife Edith were active in the Mineola Lions Club in the 1950s.

Speaking of Southhold, they have a fine Indian Museum there. It is not just a few arrowheads either. They have a fine collection of spears, pottery, clothes, wigwams, wampum, artifacts, canoes, bows and arrows and tools. The museum has maps showing the route of Indian migration across the Bering Sea which was then a land bridge and descending down the Western coast of North America arriving in this area about 12,000 years ago. Interesting books are available there too like Indian Tribes of North America. The museum is only open Saturday and Sunday 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
